Operator caused malfunction - Buffer Retainer

First off, I am still learning this art and am always looking to advance the craft.

I go shooting with a friend, pull out the AR, and fire about 5 shots... the bolt sticks to the rear. I check that the mag is seated and pull the charging handle, the bolt returns forward. I fire again, the bolt sticks. I slap the slide catch and the bolt returns. Fire one more time, bolt sticks and becomes stuck. There was no round chambered, I removed the mag. The charging handle had free movement forward and back, the slide catch was not engaging the bolt carrier, the bolt remained stuck backwards.

Popped the rear takedown pin and split the gun, I see two items free floating in the receiver - the buffer retainer and retainer spring. My conclusion: when recently installing a sling attachment to the stock I failed to check that the retainer was properly captured, I should have tightened the stock 1-2 more turns in. The result was a malfunction with a somewhat mangled retainer spring and two items free floating around in the lower, which for me took the AR out of the game.

With current events I was hard pressed to find a parts/spring kit for the AR, luckily the buffer retainer springs seem to be in stock - I guess because not too many folks are silly enough to make the mistake I made :-)

I've seen people do that as well. It gets a whole lot trickier when the carrier is wedged halfway in the buffer tube and you can't split the upper/lower!

I suppose this makes me glad that I notched my mil-spec tube SLIGHTLY to get one full extra turn since without the extra turn, my retainer was only barely captured. Some people were giving my grief but I just didn't feel comfortable seeing the tune only making contact at the very edge of the retainer.
