Check out that website, and then google more if it doesn't answer everything for you. Universal has gone through several different stages, and their guns run the gamut from good to atrocious. Without more specifics, nobody can tell you much more about it. And just because it is mint doesn't mean that it is worth more. It might simply mean that it is a shiny turn. It all depends on which kind you have. I have one that appears to be made in the 1980s, but uses a lot of mil spec parts. I have seen others that have the stamped parts that barely qualify as useful clubs or tomato stakes.

Typically, the non-military M1 Carbines are not as popular, collectable, or desirable as their military issue counterparts.

The early Universal used mostly USGI parts and are good shooters.

I read good AND bad about Universals, fwiw my dad bought one (maybe in the seventies, used...not sure) and we inherited it back in the eighties. Took it out a few times the last couple years, works fine and imo fun to use, fun to shoot. Pretty sure we are keeping it, though as I saw recently in another thread on cg, we wouldn't be considering it as a primary home defense firearm.

hth, OP have fun, give it a try and see what you think.

I have one made in 1962. It's a good enough shooter and I think would be fine for home defense. But It sets in the safe because I have a better alternative.

                  mxdam579,

Don't worry there's always someone out in the world that will want it. If it's in mint condition like you say I'd just keep it clean and put it away. Just remember.....not all GI parts fits on that civilianized rifle.
