i'm sure you think no one posted a link to this story when it originally ran two years ago.

besides, it's just promoting chivers' book "the gun," which was published at about that time (it's very good, a recommended read). esquire ran a separate piece by chivers the same month with a somewhat different focus.

The AK-47 design was based upon soviet military doctrine. Essentially the Soviets knew they would have numerical superiority in any fight and their strategy was to overrun the enemy with bullet hoses. Watch WW-II footage and you get the idea... Men with PPsH SMGs riding on vehicles right into the enemy and hosing them down. The AK isn't meant for the same type of warfare as the AR-15 design.

What is truely awesome is the AK-74 because you get Kaleshnikov reliability with the ballistics of a modern rifle.
