who is the best M1A(M14) gunsmith in Bay Area?

hello everyone~ i want some mod to be done on my M1A (unitinizeing the piston, steel bedding to the fiberglass stock, truing and tuning the trigger, mounting a scope mount.. etc).

I think the M1A is very different from other rifles and is its own breed.... M1A can't be free-floated and the piston need to be unitinized for accuracy... does anyone know a good gun smith that has extensive experience on accurizing the M1A in Bay Area? or some area near it? i am willing to drive up to 250 miles.

(i know two gunsmiths in Taxes and Oregon who are specialized in M1A.... but the shipping + FFL transfer fee might add up to $200+.....)

    thank you~

You'll only need to pay shipping. You can ship the rifle directly to an out of state FFL and they can ship it directly back to you. You don't need to pay any FFL transfer fees.

This is assuming that the gunsmiths in Texas and Oregon are licensed, and if you are talking about who I think you are then yes, they are licensed.

For the kind of work you want done, Ted Brown is the best in the business. You'll only have to pay for shipping, there's no need to involve an FFL on your end.

A goodly portion of the match M1A's shot in this state were built by him. That's where mine goes.

I have to get in line and support m24armorer, he just did a garand bbl install for me and I am 110% sold on his work. I have had work done by the guy in TX, but I much rather keep my gun related money in the bay area.

Go with M24armorer, you will be pleased with his work.

Waking up this thread because I'm also looking to have my M1A bedded. I emailed m24armorer, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this guy

His prices look cheap. $100 for bedding + unitizing gas system. He told me a wood stock would be less than $100 (I have a fiberglass so I'd probably use a new wood stock for this).

The gas cylinder and barrel band is what needs to Unitized. It's important that some who does it for you to really know what they are doing. The one's named above would be the ones I would consider. Ted brown would be my choise.

I spoke to Ted Brown on the phone once when I was going to get a M1A, and was impressed by his knowledge. I'm sure his skills and craftsmanship match his reputation. However, the original poster doesn't want to ship to Oregon, so spending another $50 for shipping is a no-go in this case. Maybe the original poster doesn't realize it's legal for him to ship a rifle to a licensed gunsmith and receive it back directly without having to go through a DROS every time. Maybe he's just new to Hi-Power and wants the best built rifle in the hopes that some day his skills will match the rifle, but is unsure if that will ever happen so he doesn't want to spend any extra money on the rifle at this time. If I was still going to get a M1A for Hi-Power like I had originally wanted, Ted Brown would be my choice. But then, that's just my opinion.
