    Help on AR-15 Upper

    Hey Folks,

I'm a left handed shooter and have decided on a 16" upper.

    I was looking at this:

but it is pretty absurdly expensive for an upper, and I think they make it left handed by using some parts made from stag, like this one:

Shop rifle parts (2,680) at Brownells, including barrels, stocks, triggers, and bolt carriers to customize, repair, or upgrade your rifle’s performance.

If I try to build that upper by buying individual parts, what exactly do I need to buy? If the noveske complete upper has other accessories listed that are not required, what do those parts actually do/add to the rifle?

Thanks guys, oh and if you wanted to put in your 2 cents about 16" v 18" v 20" feel free

The only thing missing on that Noveske upper is the sights.

To build that upper you would need:

    - Left-handed upper receiver

    - Left-handed bolt carrier group

    - Charging handle

    - Barrel

    - Low profile gas block

    - Gas tube w/roll pin

    - Barrel nut

    - Handguard

    - Muzzle device

I would not go with an 18" or 20" barrel unless you plan on mounting a scope and shooting a lot of match quality ammo.

16" is the perfect all around barrel length, in my opinion.

Thanks for the input, I will probably put 4x at most on the rifle and thats down the road. If I bought the noveske barrel which is probably around 500-800, how much would all the other stuff cost on average?

No idea, shop around because things are getting hard to find and certain vendors are jacking up prices as a result.

What are you planning on doing with this rifle?

There are other options for stainless barrels, that don't cost as much as the Noveske.

Ok, let me phrase it this way... what pieces of an upper are worth spending a little extra money on? Basically which parts can I upgrade that would give the greatest performance increase.

I'm also not really set on a stainless barrel, so any input there is great haha

If you're building a general purpose carbine, I would go with a good hammer forged barrel with a chrome lined chamber and bore.

You can upgrade everything on these rifles, if you're an accuracy nut then I would definitely splurge for a good stainless barrel and maybe a good 2-stage trigger to go with it.
