Guess it's time to put the scope back on the Palma rifle then, eh?

There are ranges closer to you that have them. Coalinga, Pala, Camp Pendleton (Santa Margarita gun Club).

Or you could make a weekend of it. Drive up Friday night, shoot Sat & Sun, drive back Sunday afternoon. There are actually several people who do that a few times a year.

Ah, the old Folsom Special makes its return! Probably the best match for a first-time match shooter to attend.

Starts at 300yds, 10 rounds per distance (need 48 rounds total for the match) and if you like your Sighters you can score 'em.

If this match format doesn't get the fence-sitters, next-time-ers and 100yd line champions to come out and shoot, nothing will.

I'll see you winners next Saturday.

plan is to shoot Sunday's Palma match

ironic how a gun originally purchased for iron sight shooting seems to have wound up as an f-class gun

I have never shot in a competition.
Have an AR I have only stretched out to a little over 300, space available. It has some glass, bi pod and I shoot it prone almost exclusively. I'd like to try further, but probably not much "competition" for you guys.
So would a green horn slow things down too much?

A mans words may paint a pretty picture, but his actions show his true colors.

This is the perfect match for first timers. Everything is shot from the prone position. We do what's called "slow fire". You don't load up a whole magazine, you only load one (1) round at a time, fire that round on the target. The target is pulled down and a "spotting disc" is placed in the bullet hole, then the target is sent back up so the shooter can see where they hit, make any needed corrections, and do it all over again.

In this particular match you get 2 sighter shots (think of them as practice shots), and then you shoot 10 shots for record (for score). In this match, if your sighter shots are good ones - 10s or Xs - you can "convert" those to your first, or first and second, shots for record. While you are shooting another shooter is keeping track of your shots and score for you.

At the High Power matches everyone shoots, keeps score, and also spends time in the target butts pulling and marking targets.

We almost always have a few new shooters, and those with experience will always provide assistance to the new people. All you need to do is say it's your first time.

Since this is a short/mid/long range match, with the longest distance being 800 yards, any AR with virtually any ammo will be capable of keeping all shots on target.

This match is so easy and fun, even the vintage rifle guys bring out their Mausers, Mosins, and Swiss rifles to shoot with their iron sights. Some of them even score better than the "real" competition rifles.

Don't be bashful, come out and have fun. Shooting on a High Power target for score gives you something to measure your skill by if you do it on a regular basis. Don't be concerned with beating other people. It's nice to finish at the top (I usually don't, Killshot and Nimoz usually do), but most for most of us it's about our own progression.
