I bought a (legal) mini-14 from a friend and it was not in his name. Is there a way to register this gun in my name and is it illegal for me to own if i can not get it in my name.

Long guns are not registered yet. If you did a ppt and dros, waited 10 days it is now yours. After jan 2014 it changes.

Who's name is it in? Where did he get it?
It seems, based on similar threads of this nature, your friend and you will want to go to an FFL and do a PPT so it is legal. As of now you have committed a crime.
I am curious though, why would someone (you) conduct a transaction like this without looking up the rules first? I ask because it seems these threads pop up a few times a week and I don't understand why people don't research first.Starve the beast, move to a free state.

Have him return the cash. Do not take possession of the Mini-14 or you have both broken the law.
If you still want the gun after that, go to an ffl and follow the correct process. The person selling it just needs id, you need id and a 2nd proof of residence.
The mini-14 is not "in his name" and it won't be "in your name" either after you do the ffl transaction correctly...not unless you wait until 2014 to buy."But far more numerous was the herd of such, Who think too little and who talk too much." -John DrydenComment
