Help tapping thread protector

Hi,
I have a small cylinder of aluminum that I found in the trash at work and drilled it out to be tapped with a 1/2-28 thread. It's a thread protector that I'm going to put on the front of my CA legal self-loading .223 rifle since I took off the evil flash suppressor/compensator. Is there anyone in the bay area who has a 1/2-28 tap who can thread the hole for me? I'm a cheapskate and don't want to spend $12 for a tap that I'll use only once in my life. I have lots of taps, but none that big

In fact, I haven't even been able to find any that big. I only checked orchard supply though. I needed a large tap for a "distillation apparatus" I was making but had to suspend the project because I couldn't find one. I designed a water cooled condenser with a radiator and I needed to put attachments for the hose that went to my pump. I still wish to continue that project some time soon.
