18" Barrel W/Carbine Gas ??

An 18" barrel with carbine gas is likely to be extremely hard on bolt lugs. You could run it with an adjustable gas block and tune it down to a good operating pressure, but otherwise I'd advise against it.
Mid and rifle length gas systems are more common on 18" barrels. Of those two, I would go with the rifle length system as it will be a very smooth running rifle without the need for an adjustable block. IMHO, even a mid length gas sytem on an 18" barrel has more dwell time than it needs and should be run with an adjustable gas block.U.S. Navy (Retired) 1994-2015Comment

I appreciate the info. I will probably hold off then and find one with Rifle gas.
SuperSet: I don't know if there is any protocol against it so I won't link them but there are two active sellers in the Marketplace/Commercial Sales that list 18" w/carbine gas.Comment

18" with rifle gas is the cats meow. The recoil pulse is so smooth and soft.. you've made the right choice. I hear intermediate isn't that bad either. Only a few companies run intermediate... off the top of my head I know Rainier and Noveske do.
BTW Intermediate is in between mid length and rifle length.Comment

18" w/carbine gas? Yuck. There are FN HF 18" rifle length gas barrels floating around. The FN barrel would be a great start to a rifle build.sigpicComment

I have yet to see that one! as it is the carbine gas system on a 16" is too much, that's why we have a mid.you don't rise to the occasion,
you just fall back on your level of training.Comment

Maybe in .300 blk? No idea why you would do .223in carbine length gas.THEGRAYHAMComment

Dpms 18" 308 barrels have carbine gas systems on them.
I wish Dpms would put a rifle gas port on those 18" barrels.
Instead, we usually end up cutting down 20" and 24" barrels to build rifle gassed 18" 308 barrels...Randall Rausch

) They are an 18" rifle gassed 1:8 twist with a contour pretty similar to the Crane SPR barrels, minus the extended gas block seating area for the Ops Inc collar. Pretty decent tube for the <$200.00 street price.
Edit: Just noticed you said "308". Lol. They actually make the MK-12 barrel in a 308 version, but so far I haven't been able to find any available aside from a short run that went on sale about 2 years ago.Last edited by FMJBT; 11-20-2012, 10:29 PM.U.S. Navy (Retired) 1994-2015Comment

The SASS should be a mid length gas system. Are you sure it's an SASS barrel and not one of their other makes?U.S. Navy (Retired) 1994-2015Comment
