What parts for a nice AR Upper

So a couple of weeks back there was this thread about HK416 and LaRue OBR and someone commented that one can build their own and get similar to LaRue quality.

So if you were trying to build a LaRue PredatOBR equivalent upper, what would you order for a barrel, stripped upper, floating forearm etc?

I am thinking 16", red dot sighted build.

    Parts:

Noveske, BCM, LMT, Larue, Knights, Wilson Combat, Daniel Defense.

The new Noveske rail is close to the rail on the OBR.

What is the purpose of this rifle?

To put things into perspective is it gonna be a combat rifle with red dot or bench gun with a scope? competition maybe? One would approach a build completely different depending on its intended use.......

Thanks Colt45. What do you think of VLTOR stripped upper receivers? Are they all they claim to be (extra thickness of their receiver helps with accuracy)?

It would be difficult to prove the VLTOR upper does actually improve accuracy. The variables involved would make it difficult if not impossible to determine if any change in accuracy could be soley attributed to the receiver. They do look nice however Also, using just a red dot sight, it would not be possible to obtain the level of precision required to tell the difference between a VLTOR and standard AR upper. With the correct combination of parts, even standard forged AR uppers can be built into rifles that will shoot 1/2 moa, sometimes even less. A typical red dot sight will cover anywhere from 2 to 4 moa of the target area.

For the level of accuracy you seem to be going after, I would suggest a compact 1-4X or 1-6X scope in order to take best advantage of the rifles accuracy potential.

I went with a VLTOR upper receiver for my last build simply because of the improved chances it would be square as opposed to a standard ar upper receiver. A standard upper receiver can shoot just as accurately if it is in square.

To get what you're looking for, I'd choose a VLTOR upper, WOA barrel, Noveske NSR or MI Gen2 SS tube, BCM charging handle, and a BCG from a reputable maker. However, by that time I think you're real close to the price a Larue and you won't have the Larue warranty.

I agree that a RDS is not the best choice to take advantage of this type of rifles potential accuracy. The Vortex PST 1-4 power scope is a popular choice and may be a better fit.

To me personally the vLtor is just different looks. Its thicker but heavyer, if larue and lwrc are still using standard uppers, the gains of the vltor in terms of accuracy must be minimal.

Just get a mil spec upper receiver unless you're looking for a matching receiver set. The receivers that LaRue sells fit together like a glove, but as nice as they are, I'm not sure it makes a difference in accuracy.

                Here's your barrel:

^^^That's a medium contour. I believe the LaRue rifles(other than the PredatAR) have a pretty heavy contour under the handguard if I remember correctly.

If I wanted similar quality and the guaranteed accuracy of a Larue OBR, I'd buy one... and that's what I did.
