There is a reason your gun cleaning kit doesn't come with a bar of soap. If you want to clean it, use the proper cleaning solution. Water won't hurt your gun (they fight wars in the rain) but why on earth would you want to use soap? Are you planning on showering with it?

Used to clean my SKS's that way. Simple Green. broke it down and tossed everything in a tub of hot soapy water (except the Stock and trigger group) then refilled with clean water and rinsed all parts. then hit em with a towel and hair dryer. Then lubed.

I don't see a problem as long as it is dried and lubed when done.
simple green and a patch work great on a bore BTW.

Why would you do that? It's metal. Just use brake cleaner. Your gun will like it as much as your skin wouldn't.

The wife pitches a fit when I use Break cleaner indoors. Use it outside though.

Were you doing this because of shooting corrosive ammo? If so, hot water works great but you can just pour it down the barrel, no need to soak the parts.

Lots of black powder folks use soap and hot water ... don't worry about it that much. You need to make sure it is dry and lubed properly after. Some soap leaves behind residue which you may want to consider.

Personally I would stick with some hoppes, ballistol or a factory cleaner/lube. You can pick up everything you need for a few bucks at Walmart.

Oh no. Just scrubbed the piss out of the metal parts to get em clean. Then lubed. Was awhile back though. Mostly to save a few bucks. Uh, when I was younger.

Yes, use soap or anything else I can get...works great. I used to use pine oil when I was stationed in Central America , M16+Pine Oil+ in the shower with me = spotless rifle at turn in! My body and rifle would be clean long before the others who are trying to clean mud and carbon off with just CLP. Soap and water will not hurt anything.
