The M16A1 doesn't get as much love as other platforms. I suspect this will change eventually.

You will find parts here and there, sometimes entire Colt uppers. But for the lower you'll have to go with a standard, contemporary semi-auto lower, unless you want to get a custom 80% replicating an early A1 (there were 3 main versions).

Most other parts you can find if you search a bit, sometimes NOS, sometimes replicas. I have a Vietnam-era A1 stock and a NOS triangular handguard that I plan on fitting one day on a semi-auto replica of my own.

If you are looking for a lower check out this guy http://www.nodakspud.com/AR%20Lowers.htm
As for an upper and other parts check out Ar-15.com's Equipment exchange or Sarco inc.

These can turn out to be really nice rifles and I personally love the A1's sights.

Bushmaster makes a nice A1 upper that's got the teardrop FA, brass deflector, and can be ordered with M4 feedramps. I'm planning on my first AR using one with a 16" midlength setup. As much as I've resisted an AR, the idea of building my ideal carbine is too tempting.

NOTE: The Bushmaster/DPMS/Fulton Armory A1/C7 uppers are the black anodized finish, not the XM gray like the NDS lowers.

This will be something you will need to build yourself but there are original parts and replica parts that will work. Below are a few sites I found with some good quality parts for your build.

Here is the sweetest deal of the bunch:
Colt AR15/M16A1 Upper Receiver, Complete $180.00

            Original Colt AR15/M16A1 upper receiver.

It is complete with the rear sight assembly and the ejection port door assembly.
Used in very good to excellent condition.
These come from late 70's production M16A1 export rifles.

Of all the AR15/M16 series my favorite is the A1s.

Called Apex about their Colt uppers; the guy on the phone was nice and said it's the standard size, not the earlier large pin size (You guys may know this, but I asked) and said the worst looking uppers were in the 95% area as far as fit/finish and all of the parts are original. The description says they were from export models but he said something along the lines of 'sitting around in storage', so I'm not sure hwere they were stored, but he said they're in really nice condition. He was looking up the info as he was talking to me as he said they just got them in.

So..... I ordered one and it should be here by the end of next week; BRD has gotten to me. Planning an AR build has now become an actual AR build. Thinking either a 20" pencil 1:8 Criterion barrel for a modern update of the a1-style with triangle handguards or the NDS 'prototype' handguards or 18" SPR barrel and a MI-SS 12.

Compared to the Bushmaster complete A1/C7 upper, this was about $15 more shipped, but it's a legit original Colt upper. Worth it for me. Now debating on the rest of the parts.

You could always get an A2 Bushmaster AR15 http://www.bushmaster.com/firearms/competition.asp

Then go to a gun show and get some old A1 trangle hand guards

It may not be an EXACT A1, but it would be close enough and a lot easier.

Bushmaster makes a complete A1 upper with teardrop FA for about 175 shipped; I paid about $15 more for the Colt. The BMs are the Anchor Harvey(I think that's the name) forgings like the DPMS A1s as well.

Vepr54R: Thought you were talking uppers, not rifle as a whole. My bad.

OP: If youre looking for a VN-style A1, take a look at Fulton Armory; they make a 'Legacy' upper with a 20" pencil barrel that's 1:8 so you can shoot some of the newer heavier ammo. The upper is around $750 and is the A1/C7 upper, pencil barrel, chrome bcg, triangle handguards, and 3-prong flash-hider. That may be what you're looking for. Add in one of the black NDS-16A1 lowers, A1 stock and you've got it.

Well since we're on topic, and since I decided to start my build earlier than expected - does anybody know a source for 70s correct, old Colt/Simmonds/Universal magazines? (disassembled or already converted to 10-rounders, obviously) Or replicas?
