question on unregistered AW

I was at the range the other day and saw an older gentleman..maybe in his 60s shooting an AR15A2, 30 rd. mags, no BB. So I asked him "it must be nice to have this legally here in Cali". He kind of gave me a weird look and said he hadn't been out shooting in like 15 yrs. and what was I talking about. I told him about the Cali AW ban and he said he thought it was no longer in affect. I told him the federeal ban was not in affect but the Cali ban was still in place. If he didn't register the weapon with the CA DOJ back in 2000 he's got some big juervos to take it out shooting. Turns out he was oblivious to this...what can he do in this situation? Can he sell the weapon to a FFL or does he just turn it in to the police? I told him he can get rid of the lower (how legally?) and just go with an off list lower, etc. Told him about this site and he can get all the info he needs here.

I guess the point of my post is..how many legal, law abiding citizens don't even know that Cali still has the AW ban in place? Also, can he sell the preban AR15A2 to an FFL to get rid of it? Nice guy...but didn't have a clue..

Unfortunately there are lots of people out there like this gentleman. Ive met a few and they all basically tell me to MYOB so I do.. not much you can do to tell an old Vietnam Vet how to neuter his gun rights that he fought for..

Im not sure about his ability to register it now eventhough he's owned it for a long time, but Im pretty sure he could get an OLL and swap the upper over

I agree with 0351USMC. Depending on how someone approaches me with my RAWs, I either tell them it's a RAW or play stupid. How'd you approach him?

Right, and if it actually was an AR15A2, as in that's what was rollmarked on the receiver, then it is a Colt and it is on-list.
