If my dad were to gift to me a 1919A4 while visiting him (he lives outside of CA), would I still need to do a trust (or whatever the other route is I forgot) in order to bring it back with me to CA? Are there any modifications that I would need to make before bringing it back to CA?

Short answer - MUST go through a CA FFL, you cannot legally take possession out of state.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good! -
As far as a 1919A4 semi auto it is 100% CA legal. If it is a 1919A6, then you need to remove the flash hider. Also don't bring back cloth belts that will hold more than 10 rds or linked ammo if linked more than 10 rounds. If you had them in CA before the high cap mag ban then you can still use them, but you can't bring more in now. Also no hand crank like a Crankfire, they are illegal in CA even though they are legal in 47 states. Otherwise, like Librarian said transfer through a CA FFL and have fun.
