Ruger American or Remington 700 ADL - Need Help

I am in the market for an inexpensive bolt action rifle that I can have some fun with and play around with. I am not a hunter and for the most part will shoot it at the 200 yard mark which is the max distance at a range where I am a member. I would like a rifle capable of moa at 200 yards, not that I can do that but I would like to get there. There will be times that I will shoot it at longer distance, but I am primarily concerned with 200 yards.

I really like the Ruger American and have always had good luck with my other Ruger’s, and it is only$380. The drawback to this is that I would get this in either .308 or 30-06. Neither are cheap to shoot.

On the other hand, the Remington 700 ADL is available in .223 and runs about $480.00. I know the 700’s are nice guns, but I do not know the draw backs to the ADL versus other 700 models. The savings of buying 223 vs 308’s or 30-06 will cover the additional cost of the rifle pretty quick.

So … between the Ruger American chambered in .308 or 30-06 and the Remington 700 ADL chambers in .223, which do you think would be better suited for my desires listed above?

If you are not a hunter then go for a Remington 700 SPS Tactical. both rifles you mentioned are more built for as a hunting rifle.

I was looking at those as well, but they are close to $200 more than the ADL and $300 more than the American. If I am going to get up to the $700 price range there are other guns that I want to add to my collection.

I have the ruger American in 308. Be prepared it kicks like a mule. But I love it. It's small and light.

Yes, both the Remington ADL and the Ruger American in .308 kicks like a wild mule, that is why you won't enjoy it as a bench gun, so those are my hunting rifle, unless you add a very tick recoil pad, on the other hand my Remington SPS Tactical have the Axiom stock on it which I can shoot all day long as there is virtually no felt recoil at all!

Sorry guys, I shot a .308 sunday and was impressed with how little it kicked. It has an excellent recoil pad, that probably has a lot to do with it. The magazine seems a little cheep but the rest of the rifle is nice. Light, carbine type rifle.

The 700 ADL: I own one in 7mm and it kicks a lot, but that's because it is 7mm Rem Mag. A .223 should be pretty easy to shoot. The Rem ADL is built like a tank and very reliable.

That is the only reason I am thinking about the 700 ADL vs the American. I really like the American, but the lower cost and less recoil of the 223 makes me wonder which would be best for what I want.

If you want the 223 then you will have to get the Rem of the 2 you listed. I would suggest a Savage would be a good choice. They tend to be the most accurate out of the box. A weatherby Vanguard would also be in your price range I believe.
