    Recommend Me A Carbine

I've got the battle rifle and an AR platform carbine, so don't bother going there.

I've got stacks of .357 & .38 ammo and am looking for a shtf carbine to put it all to use. I really like the slide action, but am open to lever action or semi autos if they were ever made.

    16" barrel preferred.
    Simple
    Reliable

First hand experience would be great.

I'm leaning towards the Taurus Thunderbolt. Any reasons why not?

Browning makes some nice ones. Marlin also comes to mind, much cheaper.

I wouldn't buy Taurus anything, that's just me though.

I had a Winchester 94 in .357 and sold it earlier this year since it is not designed to work with .38 SPL.

The replacement was a Marlin 1894c, which I'm quite happy with. The barrel is a little longer at 20", but it is still a very fast-handling carbine.

I upgraded it with a Burris FF3 and backup iron sights

Not shown in the picture is a Minuteman Forearm ammo carrier that keeps an extra set of rounds just forward of the receiver.

Reason I went with a lever is that it is easier to operate when switching shoulders while moving. I do that routinely with my pump shotgun and while it works OK, I am much smoother transferring the Marlin from one side to the other.

One of my students went through a very dynamic rifle course with his 1894c - while all others in the course were shooting semi-autos. We went through a lot of drills where he had to get off the X in a hurry, while putting hits on the target. With very few exceptions, he kept up very well.

      Cheers,

Not legal, unless the tubular magazine's capacity is permanently reduced to 10 rounds.

The Taurus Thunderbolt (.38Special/.357Magnum) comes with a 14 round tubular magazine, which is considered a large capacity magazine [PC 16740].

So, unless you are a LEO or have the tubular magazine permanently modified to 10 rounds, a CA FFL dealer can not legally transfer it to you.

          FYI...
Lever-action firearms are exempt from the large capacity magazine laws. [PC 16740(c)]
Which is one reason why: lever-action rifles > pump/slide-action rifles

          Penal Code 16740
As used in this part, "large-capacity magazine" means any ammunition feeding device with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds, but shall not be construed to include any of the following:
          (a) A feeding device that has been permanently altered so that it cannot accommodate more than 10 rounds.
          (b) A .22 caliber tube ammunition feeding device.
          (c) A tubular magazine that is contained in a lever-action firearm.

It's my own design. Turret rotates the ghostring into position if needed.

As suggested the Marlin is nice, or you can get the Rossi 92 in 357 in 16" barrel, which is the route I will probably take.

What type of front sight set up? I've been trying to figure out some set up similar to that using a picitany rail, but it gets to be a pretty crazy height compared to that.
