    Turn the retaining ring around so the notches are out and easier to use a spanner wrench or other tool on and you are good

        Can't tell from the pics if you've got the buffer tube screwed in far enough (it needs to be right up to, and touching, the skinny tip of the spring-loaded buffer retention pin, but should not be putting any pressure on it), but you've definitely got the castle nut on the buffer tube on backwards - the slots should be outboard, not facing the lower receiver.

          Yeah, the retention pin has no pressure on it. I've got the buffer tube screwed in as far as it'll go without putting pressure on it.

          I went ahead and undid everything and put the castle nut on the right way too.

              Absolutely not!

              Mostly because I have no idea how to do that without specialized tools. Also, I'm not sure what the benefit is. Making sure the castle nut doesn't loosen?
