    SKS Modification

Is it legal to modify a 10 round integral SKS to hold a 10 round detachable magazine? I was thinking about getting one, but I have awful luck with stripper clips.

It's illegal since it's SKS and there's no good detachable magazines for it anyway.
I don't understand why in your case, but stripper clips are the easiest to use on SKS then any other rifle. It could be your technique or just bad stripper clips.
Anyway, personally I would never do it even if it was legal, although pre-ban model D is one nice rifle.

        Not legal. [PC 30510(a)(11)]

        FYI.
It's faster to load/reload using stripper clips then with the detachable "duckbill" SKS magazines.

        Penal Code 30510
As used in this chapter and in Sections 16780, 17000, and 27555, "assault weapon" means the following designated semiautomatic firearms:
        (a) All of the following specified rifles:
        (11) SKS with detachable magazine.

I've never tried SKS stripper clips, but on other guns that use them (mosin nagant for example), I just can't get them in. People keep telling me the SKS feeds nicely though.

Sounds like you need to try the stripper clips, easier to use since its 10 rounds.

IIRC there is/are an "sks" rifle which is not named sks. But I don't know what country or importer it is.

There are detachable magazines for the sks but they have been unreliable for many owners. Yes they are illegal in PRK.

The technique for stripper clips is to pull up slightly on the front tip of the top bullet while pushing down on the rear of the same bullet. Also if the stripper clips are a little rusty, they can be a PITA.

Well I haven't bought the SKS yet, or in fact used one, I was just wondering about that issue since I'm not a fan of stripper clips as a whole. When you buy an SKS do they typically come with factory made stripper clips? I think half my problem with other firearms is using aftermarket ones.

Yugoslavian. Zastava model 59 or 59/66. Last I checked Big 5 still has 59/66s. Its still too close for me to try detachable mags myself though.

CA DOJ already identifies them as SKS regardless whether it states that on the receiver or not.

There is youtube video of a guy shooting something like 300 rounds in a few minutes using stripper clips in a SKS.

stripper clips vary. I have some with "China" in script on the bottom that work great. The others I have work fair.

If the gun is not marked "SKS" it is not an "SKS" per Ca case law. See Harrot v County of Kings and come to your own conclusions.
