    Case taper= reliability

One of the reasons the ak is so reliable is that the 7.62x39 case is tapered. The 223 case is straight and as a result it will sometimes stick in a dirty chamber. What is considered the necessary amount of taper to keep a round from sticking? How much taper does the 5.45x39 have? Is it considered a tapered round?

    5,45 is tapered.

IMHO case taper has little to do with the reliability. I'm pretty confident it has more to do with the design of the weapon.....

        Case taper aids in extraction.

then make it a matter of fact with some proof, which thus far you have provided none of.

Too many variables with the platform to make a statement like that. This sorta stuff sounds like crap jealous AR fetishists LOVE to spread.

Kalishnakov said he built the taper for smooth extraction. Then he proved it.

Hey plink thanks for setting me straight. I was starting to think kalishnakov knew about reliability. Now i realize you are the expert.

I think the design of the magazine has more to do with the reliabilty of the AK design, the piston system doesn't hurt either the tapered case is just an added bonus.

223 is 0.376 at the head and 0.354 at the shoulder. That's not straight.

FWIW, the 308, 30-06, and the 8mm all have similar walls. There's a pretty long track record of reliability behind them.

Relibility covers many functions. Im talking specifically about cases sticking in chamber. Lube and clean chamber are important and will make must guns run well. Its when you get dry and dirty that there is a noticeable difference. My bushmaster runs 100% with any ammo as long as it is lubed and clean get it dry and dirty and problems start. My 7.62x39 rifles extract every time no exceptions.

Nice try buddy, MK didnt design that round. Do your homework next time.

Not to mention they are overgassed by design.
