I saw someone was selling a Steyr Scout for 2200, If i had the money right now I'd snatch it up. I'm just wondering, if the .308 has such great reach wouldn't you be squandering it's potential by using a low power optic for short range shots?
You're not squandering anything with that Scout scope
I took my Steyr Scout to Africa and took game at 250-300 yards with ease.
The only downside to the Scout, other than price, is it's proprietary magazine. BUT they give you 2 and you can top off constantly so you really only need one. Having the second mag stashed on the rifle is just gravy.
The Steyr Scout is your lightest/handiest .308 bolt action. If the SOCOM M1A is too heavy for you then get the Scout or else consider a .223.

Now, to get one in CA without going through major hoops, you'll need to order this variant, which only comes with a 20" barrel. I actually prefer the non-pistol-grip stock, but they aren't making it with the 16" barrel, so if that's important, you'll need to have the 20" barrel cut down by a gunsmith.

Seriously, based on everything you're saying here, the FN AR really sounds like the rifle you're looking for.
I was looking at one at Turners Pasadena the other day and I really liked it. Do you know what type of mags it takes? They looked like they could be metric FAL mags, but i couldn't be sure.

Dear Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms,
          Thanks for the idea!

Well, I don't have it in hand right now since it's in the process of being turned into something very much like this:

Moved to Washington a few months back and just sent off the barrel to have a suppressor permanently mounted. Once it's back (in about six months, since I'm also now waiting for the Form 4), I can take another photo.

Don't know. I know they're FNH proprietary, and I know they don't interchange with either the 17S or the FAL. I believe they're made on the same tooling as FAL magazines, but the feedlips are different to suit the different bolt.
