I think it's actually true, particularly if you are shooting non-corrosive ammo.
Even with corrosive ammo all I do is a normal cleaning (ie. Hoppes 9, CLP, Mobil1 etc.) I've given up using hot water, I think there's a lot of internet lore surrounding corrosive ammo. My 5.45 and 7.62 show no signs of rust and I'm 6 months into this new regimen.Comment

I first get them dirtier than most AK owners do...
