Ruger M77 Hawkeye Compact in 223 - Anyone own one ??

I'm looking at the Ruger Compact rifle in 223 for my 10 year old son.
    Primarily target shooting.

Anyone have any experience with these rifles?
    Are they accurate?

Thanks for any info you may have.

I've owned various m77 models and think they are fantastic, rugged little guns. Personally, I've only used them for hunting and can't necessarily recommend one for target shooting unless it has a heavy or fluted barrel because that sucker will heat up quick, especially if your kid likes pulling the trigger.

If it's your son's first major high powered rifle then good choice on the action. The Mauser-style action is the most replicated action in the world for a reason; all my bolt guns that I use on a regular basis have a Mauser action... There's not a lot that can go wrong with the weapon mechanically and I think he'll find it easy to use. So, I think it would be a perfect little rifle to teach shooting fundamentals.

.223 is a good call on caliber too. Mild recoil, inexpensive, easy money at 100 yards.

I shot my brother in laws fathers M77 Compact Magnum in .308 and it was everything you would expect from Ruger.

I have an M77 CM in 308. The only issue I have with the rifle is that there are no windage marks on the rear sight. It was shooting slightly left @ 100 yds out of the box and small windage adjustments are somewhat difficult to accomplish.

The regular compact model in 223 does not have any sights.
Just the rings for a scope.
I think yours may be the compact magnum.
