    Saiga 7.62x39 and 922r....

    Hello,

I've been thinking of the saiga in 7.62x39, but had some questions about this rifle and 922r.

I don't plan on converting it, but I do want to perhaps get a new hanguard with a scout rail and possibly a muzzle brake. Maybe even so far as to modify it to accept AK mags.

What are the limits of what i can do without triggering 922r?

What mods are required to outfit it with a scout rail?

Do they make saiga specific handguards with scout rails?

Keep in mind i want to keep the rifle stock and featureless setup.

I've always wanted an AK pattern rifle, and with 5.56 prices going up, 7.62x39 is looking better every day.

Aside from doing a little more research so as not to produce an assault rifle in the great state of Komifornia, I used this site.

Thanks, I'm well aware of CA AW laws. I'm just looking at 922r compliance only.

      Thanks for the link.

Threading the barrel would trigger 922(r)

What about just changing out the handguard to a scout rail?

I want to do the same thing, I want to keep it in its feautureless state but yet use my preban ak mags. Only way to do it, you will have to buy a U.S Made handguard, dinzagarms fire control group (counts as 2 922 parts) and then Im pretty sure you need one more 922compliant part, which could be a tapco gas piston, or muzzledevice or stock (nobody makes US made oem stocks for the saiga), unless you can find a company that will make you a custom wood stock same as the oem one? And or you can buy the dinzagarms fire control group, the handguard and make sure EVERY ak mag you have has some U.S. made parts in it (baseplate, follower etc). I personally would do all of the above if i cant find a U.S Made buttstock.

FYI, There was a guy (BattlerifleG3) or something like that, he used to make oem Saiga furniture. I sent him an email about 5 years ago and still nothing. He was sooo busy, i just gave up.

Anyhow dont quote me on how many parts you need exactly but its very easy to trigger the 922compliance. I would just buy the handguard, fcg and piston and even put a change out the baseplates/followers in your mags and your good to go.

OH and dont forget you need your bullet guide to accept Ak mags.

If you do this to your Saiga, your gonna have one awesome featureless rifle that would be perfect for anything. I hate how the grip wraps feel and monsterman grip. Id rather go this route.

Modifying it to so that it can accept large capacity magazines will require Fed 922r parts compliance.

What's the most you can alter without triggering 922r?

And of course following CA laws.

Would a new handguard with rails take it out of "sporting" configuration, thus triggering it?

It seems AK pattern rifles work better with scout setups, is why i want to change them out.

I don't mind using 10 rnd saiga mags or not having a muzzle device, but I'd like to have my optics setup the way I like.

                      No.

However, do not attach a vertical forward grip or an angled forward grip to the handguard with rails. Doing so will run afoul CA laws.
