Mini 14 Threaded Muzzle Break Madness

    Afternoon All,

I just acquired an early Ruger Mini 14-GB with a threaded muzzle. I cannot (for the life of me) find a Cali-Legal muzzle break that will fit the thread pattern. Can anyone shed some info or point me in the right direction.

    Cheers,

You'll need to figure out the diameter and threads/inch (I read that it may be 9/16-24) and find out if it's fairly standard (like 9/16-24). If not then you'll probably have to have a gunsmith custom thread something for you - they'll need to open up the exit hole to .020" over the bullet diameter and assure correct bore alignment anyway. I had a heavily modified Shrewd Varmint Brake installed on my Mini-14 but a standard model brake would be easier to index. The back of the brake can even be tapered to blend into the barrel.

        Ruger muzzle brake thread size

Try Ruger customer service, I've always found them to be very cooperative.

Presume your GB is like this???

Good suggestions, but read the advertising each manufacture publishes. IF it in any way implies there is some form of 'flash' suppression or reduction, it probably is going to be iffy on the legalities.

MAKE SURE you get a thread checker and verify your thread count. OSH & $7 and it is in your tool box forever. Also mic the barrel for the proper diameter. The 'normal' AR thread is 1/2 x 28 and is misleading as my early GB (181 series) was 9/16 x 24. Calling Ruger just got me the wrong data as the older weapons have not been added to the database (I think they guessed).

You might look at the Smith Enterprises Good Iron Muzzle Breaks. http://www.smithenterprise.com/ Good information and impressive videos.

The SEI break is two pieced with a lock collar spun on first and then the break. Use the Mark 1 eyeball for alignment and lock it down. Test run a few rounds for functioning and if good, a drop of med Loctite is sufficient. YMMV, of course. Good Luck.
