surely someone has figured out a way to reliably machine the barrels instead of hand-regulating?

Baikal realized that you could not make a reasonably priced side by side rifle with the traditional method of barrel regulation, and came up with an elegant solution. Sig

Features auto tang safety, double triggers, adjustable barrel regulation, Picatinny rail, rifle sights, machined steel receiver and mono block, hammer forged chrome lined

Sabatti also makes safari cartridge double rifles for about $5,000. Cabelas sells them.

Besides the tradition behind them, what is the advantage of a double rifle compared to large bore lever gun in the field?

I'm sure I'm going to be given a bunch of links and information here, but I haven't seen any lever gun that could handle a 458 WinMag or any of the big Rigby or Lott rounds.

No moving parts other than trigger and firing pin = higher reliability when an 8,000 pound pissed off death beast is charging you from 30 yards away.

Agreed in the "larger" bore, but I've been seeing a lot of the double guns in more standard calibers lately.

Besides the ability to handle higher power cartridges than levers guns. The biggest advantage to double rifles is an instaneous second shot. In dangerous game hunting a lot of people like that option as it's faster than any magazine rifle. Also double rifles come traditionally with two seperate locks and firing assemblies so if anything breaks on the gun you still have a functioning single shot rifle.

The Bakail is the lowest price double Rifle. I handled one at a gun shop earlier this summer. It's appeared to be about the same quality/fit/finish as their SxS and O/U shotguns which IMO wasn't something I was willing to spend $1,000 on.

Ther is a gunsmith somewhere on the east coast (I think) that can build you a double rifle based on a Stoeger 410 SxS receiver. He quoted me something like $3,500 a couple years ago which included new walnut stocks and caliber of my choosing. He had a seriers of videos on youtube showing a build. You can probably find him on YouTube if you search 405 winchester double rifle.

I've looked a the Russian double rifles and they seemed rather crude. I've never fired one.

I've looked over the Sabatti rifles at Cabela's and they appear pretty good but again, I've never fired one.

I've been thinking about getting a double rifle and I think ( if I couldn't find a used one I want at a price I'd pay ) I'd buy the Sabatti.
People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

CZ makes an over/under double gun for about $5K. I've not seen one in the US though.

Crazy glue two Ruger #1's together?

A friend of mine had one re-chambered in .460 Weatherby, which makes .458 Winchester look wimpy. That gun was a BEAST.

Saw a Remington double rifle in .45-70 at OC Armory a couple of weeks ago.
