M1A Socom II - RAIL Question.

Howdy guys. I have a BURNING question that has been bugging me for well over a year and I came accross this pic just a minute ago and now I'm sitting here like "What the Hell."

Let me explain Currently I have this gorgeous Springfield Socom II with the VLTOR rail sitting there BEGGING for some optics. SO... Currently have an EOTech 556 Holosight and the Eotech FTS 3x magnifier... fun times right??

WRONG. The magnifier doesn't have enough eye relief for it to be of practical use. As you can see by the Socom with the white background, the rail system only extends to the Front of the breach. Of course thats the one I have.

Now if you take a look at the one with the black background the rail goes all the way accross the breach. PLEASE, what rail is that!?

I dont have another $1000.00 to drop on a JAE stock and I dont want to "Jerry Rig" a rail on there. I want it legit, and I've seen a rail that stretches all the way back over the breach. That rail system would be PERFECT.

Any input or help would be GRREAAAATLY appreciated.

Troy makes a rail that you are describing. Very nice quality. I had one but sold it to use the whole troy chassis. You can find good deals on M14forum.
Troy usually has a good sale at christmas so you could wait. You could also use a off set rail from La rue to span the gap over the receiver.http://troyind.com/rail-systemsacces...14-rails-rails

That's just the extended vltor rail. It comes from Springfield that way. Troy does make an extended rail, but you loose use of your iron sights.

Vltor has a new extended rail, but I have yet to see anyone with it except for xnewyawker and I have never seen it for sale anywhere

Edit, here is the rail http://www.vltorstore.com/casv-14-m14-m1a-rail-system/

That is just the extended rail option from Springfield. They aren't as common as the shorter rail. Call springfield and see if they can replace your top rail. It is just rivited on...

If I may interject, I tried an optic on the Socom II. The low profile barrel, synthetic stock, lack of bedding, modified gas system and general flimsiness of the Vltor rail led to less than stellar accuracy.

My Socom II started with just an Aimpoint M3 in a low mount, too low for a swing to side magnifier. I switched over to a 3-9 scope and a bipod and the fun began. The stock rail had so much cant in it that the scope had insufficient travel to zero 150g ammo at 100 yards. I sent the rifle to SA, they shimmed the rear rail mount down and printed a decent target (2 MOA) with 110g ammo, didn't even know bullets that short existed in .308. The bottom line is this platform prefers light weight bullets, bullets that you will not find in bulk and has horrendous harmonics with the Vltor rail. I switched back to the Aimpoint and am happy as a clam with it like that. My .02, don't change a thing. It was designed to be a CQB platform, let it stay that way. Others warned me too....

          Best wishes
