6.5 grendel bolt for 7.62x39 AR?

    Howdy all.
Looking for a proven dependable 7.62x39 bolt for an AR is like finding hens teeth, and the two seemingly universally lauded options are out of production.

Seems that the Grendel cartridge is similar to the 7.62x39, so what makes them incompatible? I realize that I'm not the first person to think of this, and that if it worked it would be all over the place. So what kills it?

The original Alexander Arms Grendel bolt is cut to a different depth. Some makers however are chambering their rifles to match the 7.62x39 bolts. I don't know who is making theirs and who is buying them off the self though, so its hard to say if one is any better than the other. Particularly for use with 7.62x39 as opposed to Grendel. You could probably call a couple of makers up and ask them what bolts their using, and if you could buy one off of them.

I'd look into a SuperBolt or JP Enhanced bolt made out of SAE 9310 instead of Carpenter 158 tool steel.

As the ARx39's are notorious for cracking extractors and lugs (usually the one opposite of the extractor).

The above mentioned bolts are both harder and have be re-designed to help prevent this.

Or you could try MGI's x39 bolt which is also said to fix the issue:

And don't forget to look into the AR firing pin mods (or a heavier hammer spring) to deal with some of the mis-fire issues due to Eastern Block Mil-Spec ammo.

Hope this helps you out some.

I wonder if the Beowulf bolt is cut to the same depth as the Grendel bolt or if it would work for a 7.62X39 bolt since the rim size is the same. hmmmm

I asked because the above mentioned bolts are unavailible, except the MGI which I'm trying to avoid.

Some of the above mentioned bolts are available through distributors instead of the manufacturers, as almost all of the mfgs. are currently inundated with back orders.

It would be interesting to see if those bolt faces are different depths or not and all still roughly the same size rim diameter still.

I'll look around later on tonight and see if I can find any for you.

Go to AR15 Performance and get one of their 7.62x39 Super Bolts. I have several thousand rounds through with mine, and it has had no issues.

Ok...stay with me here...out of production, none in stock! Lol!
Ive called them and LMT. No response from LMT and AR15 perf. was quick with a response-none in stock, wont be in production for at least 6 months.

Now If you guys have a link to a distributor with these in stock great, please post it up, but those bolts are long gone from what I can find.

Bummer. Yeah, I missed that. Have you tried LMT? I'll poke around and see if I can find any in stock anywhere.
