    M1A Scout Scope/Optic

    Guys,

What are some good options on optics for a M1A scout?

It's hard to get a good cheek weld with anything but iron sights. A low-mounted red dot would work OK on the forward rail. I don't know anything about magnified optics though, at least not without going for a standard style mount.

        A.R.M.S. makes a good mount.

It's a scout rifle, use a scout scope. Leopold FX-II Scout IER 2.5x28mm or Burris Scout. Both are under $300. It's the only way to get magnification and a cheek weld on that platform. Otherwise you're going to have to use a dorky cheek pad or custom stock that completely destroys the ergos of the rifle.

The Hopco USA MRD mount puts the optic close to the bore so you can maintain a solid cheek weld without the use of a riser and keeps aesthetics of the rifle. Compatible with all M14 family receivers and there is a model for most micro red dots.

Be careful with a sight like that, because you loose the use of your iron sights (replaces your rear peep hole sight). I much prefer a forward mounted low dot if going with a dot, especially on a Scout, which already has a rail.

I personally took the rail off my Scout and just run irons. I love that sight picture.

Edit: Aimpoint Mirco will cowitness with your irons:

Excellent points and the UltiMAK M8 Micro T-1 combo is awesome.

Using a Scout scope on the same railed hand guard is also very nice.

BTW, M14.ca offers the (RD) mount and it does have an iron sight tunnel.
They also offer the MRD mount that is similar to the one shown earlier and it also lacks a sight tunnel.

The MRD becomes a large ghost ring rear sight. We tested this and got positive results.
We ran the entire match with the optic turned off. On this stage it was 2 body and 2 head shots and placed 6th on the stage.

                          Mount: Bassett
Bassett M14/M1A Scope Mounts won't shoot loose.

Easy on, easy off, with next to no loss in accuracy.

Scope: Tons to chose from. Best bang for the buck: SWFA Super Sniper 10X42. Have a bigger budget? Leupold Mark 4 series are a good match. Got more to spend? Then you're richer than me!

More free advice: With the M1A/M14s a scope is nice for load development/testing, but the real challenge of the rifle is becoming proficient with the irons sights. Learn to use them. They're one of the best ever put on a rifle. 8 million users can't all be wrong!
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles." -Colonel Jeff Cooper

Sorry, I won't be removing the irons on my rifle, ever.
I'd get either a forward mounted mini dot, or an ARMS mount and possibly a cheek riser (which sometimes even looks cool itself).

I use a 1 to 4X on an ARMS 18 with a wood cheek piece fitted and bolted to the stock. The cheek piece is an Enfield sniper repro sold through Numrich Arms. It provids enough height to give an excellent cheek weld, using the ARMS 18 and a straight tubed 1 to 4X scope helps keep it low. There's about a credit card worth of space between the scope bell and the top of the peep aperture.
