    Which Upper?

So I want an AR that is a caliber other than 7.62 and 5.56. I was thinking of going with the 3 following rounds; 9mm, 5.7, 300Blackout. I was thinking of going with the 5.7 since the high round capacity than 9mm, more of a PDW round.

Wit hthe AR57 I think the only option out there is to buy a complete upper. What do you guys think?

Personally if it was my pick, I would go with 6.8 spc or 6.5 grendel.

5.7 is ok, you are still limited by the CA max of 10 rounds, so I don’t think firepower is really a concern between the choices. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong.

I would take the 5.7 in a handgun, or true SBR/PDW... even then ammo choice are limited and you can’t get the “fancy rounds” as a civilian. As much as I want a FN Five-Seven pistol, CA just kills it for me between the mag capacity and ammo restrictions…

I'm going to be finishing my LR-308 soon and am also planing on a 6.8 upper.

I like the 5.7 but it seems there's only one company out there. Anyone know of more companies, if there are any? I like the round and the fact the spent casings drop straight down.

The rounds are limited but not when I take it out of state

For the same amount I can build a nice 9mm upper.

Get the 300 blackout; once you leave the DPRK you can get a can and have a very quiet rifle. It's also been SAAMI'd, so you can buy factory ammo for it or make your own from .223 brass. The 300 Whisper never caught on because SSK kept it proprietary and you had to buy everything from them at greatly inflated prices.

I was thinking of going that way but I already have the LR-308. I know it's completely different but I was looking for a light high capacity (if needed) upper.

i think 6.5 grendel is the longest shooting and most accurate round in the ar15 platform you already have the 308 so maybe you dont want that. the 6.8 doesnt shine balistically until you get to pistol barrel length but then the 9mm is way cheaper to shoot. depends on what you want to get out of it
You can have my guns when I run out of ammo. which won't be anytime soon!

Basically a PDW style. I want a higher velocity round. That's why I thought the 5.7 that I could get a high round coun't. That's why I initiallyother leaned that way.

Then I started to think about the rounds avvailable. The 9mm would be fun with a short 10.5" barrel.

Then again, like you said an sbr upper would be effective with the 6.8. Conflicted here.

                I'd get a 6.8

I have an AR9, 300 and a 6.8 in a diff platform. For me the 6.8 downside is ammo is relatively hard to get and pricey. The 300 bonuses have been noted above and ammo much cheaper than 6.8. The AR9 is flat out A LOT of fun to shoot.

I figured the AR 9mm would be great to shoot. The price of 6.8 is a concern for me, yet again I was considering a AR57 upper. I'm still thinking about it.

I'm kind of starting to lean towards the 300 right now. I was looking at AR 7.62x39 parts and figured why not just a 300 blackout?

The 9mm is SO much fun. You can use at indoor handgun ranges generally. Outdoors the ballistics are reasonable to 100 yds. Cheap reloads available. Mine has been rock solid and pretty accurate (100 in) even though it's a cheap @$$ build. As a personal defense weapon I think it's pretty nifty. I guess an argument is that you could get pretty much the same thing functionally with a hi point (but ugly) for a lot less money and trouble.

.300 blk is really nice too IME. If you go out of state you can get a can and it's eery with the subsonic loads. Ammo is down to under .50/rnd for reloads and the "cheap" Remington. In terms of "build" the only real difference with 556 is the barrel. Everything else is the same pretty much so you may already have lots of parts laying around

I don't have personal experience but I've heard that 7.62x39 the bolt can be problematic unless you get the LMT(?) bolt. Lots of breakage. And the ammo isn't cheap if you live somewhere magnetic ammo is a no no.
