  • Building a Stripped Lower

Okay. I think I am on my way. I will not buy any parts or the stripped lower until I get everything spec'ed out.

Because of the way it has to be loaded, I decided that I want this to be an accurate rifle.

My first step is researching the parts for the lower.

What kits do I need to get?

For the trigger kit, what is available if I want a light trigger pull? Bushmaster has one that is 3.5 lbs in stage one then 1 lb for stage two. MSRP is $120.

RRA has a National Match two stage for also $120 but I do not know what the pull is.

What other options do I have or should look at?

Thanks for putting up with my modular approach to this project.

I like my Chip McCormick (I think Technical Ted likes his, as well). It is a drop in trigger, easy to install. Choices are single or dual stage, curved or straight. Midway also carries them for a little more.

I agree with CG the Chip McCormich approach is the way to go, it is a very good solution. I have read many good posts on the product. Have you decided what type of lower, FAB 10 or Vulcan?

My boyfriend talked with the person from FAB10 last night. Very helpful.

Anyway, he (BF) has a friend who takes appart his AR lower all the time so it would be easy for him to build if we got a stripped lower. Because of this FAB10 is willing to sell us a stripped lower. The cost is $335.

The price difference is about $70. I am leaning towards a FAB10 still though unless my BF can see a stripped lower in person and tell me the extra $70 is not worth it.

What I'm trying to figure out now too is the total cost to build "my" lower and see if it is worth NOT going the FAB10 complete lower (minus stock) route.

Read my 2nd post again and noticed that I wasn't clear. Sorry about that.

What I meant was that the stripped FAB10 was $70 more than a stripped Vulcan. I think a complete FAB10 is $100+ more than the stripped FAB10.

What is the GTS website Ted and do you know the cost? Also, how do you like your RRA two stage trigger? Do you know the rough lbs the trigger pull is or feel like?

Which one would you get if you had to choose Ted? Chip Mc or RRA? Sounds like the Bushmaster Competition Trigger is out of the question???

Thanks. Been thinking about this stuff and can't seem to sleep tonight. Oh well, I've been kept up by worse thoughts...

Seems that the quality of Vulcan lowers is inconsistent. The first examples I saw made me cringe. The finish was sloppy and the steel mag bodies just plain suck.

However, about a month ago I looked at a shipment that Irvington Arms (Big Mac) received and thought they looked pretty good--I was tempted. The mag still sucked, but a couple of people here have successfully replaced the steel OEM mag body with Bushmaster 10 rd mags (A task to be done out of state or "in a timely fashion"--depending on who you listen to--so as not to create an illegal AW). Rather than have an FFL special order a Vulcan for you, you might want to track down a stocking dealer where you can examine the lower you're going to buy.

CG had the link hidden in his post as the underscored "Chip McCormick". In the open the URL is http://globaltactical.com/axami/shop.php?grd=209&prd=210 GTS (AKA Denny or Denny's Guns) has a price of $159.

Haven't put a trigger scale to the RRA installed in my Bushmaster lower. It is slightly heavier than the CMC in my FAB10. To me that's a plus since the Bushmaster is my SHTF rifle and I think a little more resistance adds a bit more safety margin.

Which one would you get if you had to choose Ted? Chip Mc or RRA? Sounds like the Bushmaster Competition Trigger is out of the question???
I'd go with the CMC for a FAB10 target rifle. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
+1. I had an Armalite trigger group in my Fab-10, I got a Bushie for my Vulcan; the Bushie is crispier than the Armalite. Now I got the McCormick in the Vulcan and plan to replace the Armalite with a Bushie in my Fab-10. Did anybody follow that? As far as Fab-10 vs. Vulcan, here is my review of Fab-10 vs. Vulcan

Thanks for the info you guys. I feel stupid for missing CG's link.

BF checked with RRA and they said theirs was around 4-4.5 lbs.

Looks like I would need to get the lower parts kit anyway even if I want to put in a nicer trigger so maybe I will go that route first and upgrade later.

That is what I did and now I have a spare trigger group in case I have a problem with one of the other two.

..and so it begins. Won't be long before your spare parts stash evolves into another rifle </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
