I have heard that the first ammo made for the 9mm Luger was scorchingly hot and had to be detuned once weaker guns came on the scene. My 1942 Luger refuses to work with anything less than max loads and a firm grip.

to all the answers that raised more questions,on this site (and others) on 7.62x51 nato, and .308 winchester and specifically on the cetme!!! (see avatar) and g3 first on the lower powered cetme round, the cetme model A was in 8mm mauser, the cetme model B was in the extinct 7.62cetme cartridge which oddly enough shared the ballistics of 8mm,this was done before .308 nato became standard and most of europe was like us using 30-06 in m1 garands, but done with the knowledge of a standard nato round would be forthcoming, the cetme model C like mine is chambered for the standard 7.62x51 nato,as is the G3, the original HK G3 had cetme stamped on thier parts untill 1962 when germany rethought german engineering, and changed some parts to ease production, and lower cost, for instance the buffer on a cetme has less felt recoil then a g3, the g3 buffer has less material, and costs less, the trunnion also was changed for mass production of a larger man army than spain, therefore the barrels are interchangeable, but the bolt heads/locking piece/bolt carrier are not, what to shoot? it is all about chamber pressure.
I recommend winchesters USA brand 147gr FMJ/BT, federals american eagle brand 150gr FMJ/BT, or remingtons umc brand 150gr FMJ/BT these are near enough to nato M80 ball, with muzzle velocity slightly above M80's 2770 fps, but most importantly well below 50,000 c.u.p. that you want to stay away from with any .308 nato chambered weapon including M1a (as it could break the op-rod) always have a .308 broken shell extractor, when using commercial brass as it is softer and meant for the many commercial chambers and higher pressures that can be achieved in a bolt action, it could rupture if it is not really designed for a self-loading battle rifle, never use steel cased ammo, as the chamber is not tapered, the fluted design of the cetme/G3 helps to extract the many varients from country to country of standard ball ammo but does not do squat to help if the case is thinner than military cases, the cetme/G3 uses mass recoil by means of roller lockers, based on an end of WW2 design the STG-45,which is based on the MG42, MG34, families of light machine guns, which will run all day if fed correctly, just like the cetme/G3 just remember no wolf, no hunting rounds, learn the ballistics of the cartridge you intend to use or buy mil surp which is drying up,and getting expensive,or reload as I do. His conclusion is basically correct...realize military gas guns were designed around a 150-ish grain bullet. Using a bullet in that weight area with a cartridge loaded to 2700-2800fps will keep pressure comfortable for a gun designed for a NATO round.

i have pumped 308 in both of my G3 and one of my cetmes, the cetme will take it only after i switched my rollers with a + size rollers, my G3's work fine as is and all 3 of them were kit builds
