    "headspace"???

    O.K. I'm new here and am planning to build my first oll but have one question conserning the build of the upper assy. I looked through "how to build an upper assembly" in the tips for a new member section and is what I don't understand as of yet is how headspaceing is handled. Is it headspaced when the barrel is cut at the factory? Or is that only when you buy matched bolt/barrel sets?

      If you buy a complete upper assembly, it will come assembled and headspaced.

          I assume you are talking about an AR-15. If so, the headspacing is done with the barrel extension installed by manufacturer. With a new barrel you should also use a new bolt.

              Sorry, yes its a AR style platform, and I was planning to put an upper together from parts. So if I understand correctly when I buy a barrel I should recieve a matched bolt with it?

                  No, unless you go to a boutique vendor. Just buy a new bolt with a new barrel, you don't want to use an old one; with an old one you might have issues. A new bolt will headspace just fine with a new barrel. If you are worried buy some headspace gauges to confirm.

                      Not most of the time, only for real expensive competition rigs.

                      The advice is to use a new bolt with a new barrel and keep them together. The USMC TM also specifies this, as with use the locking lugs on the bolt and the barrel extension will wear a matching pattern.
                      If/when you break a bolt, then you'll need to watch the headspace as you test fit a new bolt.
