    Converting a Norinco NHM-91

Can the barrel on a Norinco NMH-91 be swapped out with the standard 16 inch barrel and there by converting it into a regular/standard/traditional AK-47 rifle? And where would I get such a barrel?

I have always wanted a Norinco, and I just found out that the only model we can have in Calif is the NHM-91. But I don't really want the longer RPK type version. I would want to have it regular sized like a MAK-90. I would probably like to convert it to a traditional stock set as well.

    Any advice on this matter?

    thanks in advance

I measured my 91, barrel is around 19mm into the trunnion. Bulgy 74 is 22mm. You'd need to turn down the euro barrel and headspace it. Stock will interchange will receivers that have a 90 degree rear cut. Some are slanted; other than 90 degrees. As soon as you change stocks to a pistol grip, you trigger the 922r regs. I've bought a US made muzzle break, gas piston, pistol grip, stock, and mag follower and base plate. Don't do anything you can't undo, those rifles haven't been imported since '94...

I thought we could only get a Mak-91 (RPK style) & a BWK-92 (carbine in .223 cal) in CA?

Correct. Nhm-91 is listed. Mak91, bwk-92, gsad and Clayco are not listed. Prepare to pay for the last 2 if you can find them

NHM91 SPORT is listed; not an NHM91. It has to be an EXACT listing, not just close. If you look on the flow chart, you'll see lots of gun models that are banned thusly: Norinco: AK47 (ALL) If the DOJ wanted to ban all the NHM models it would have used: Norinco: NHM (ALL) But they didn't.

Realize the DOJ bureaucrats didn't know squat about guns when they were making up the lists. They probably didn't know the NHM91 existed. Not a very good internet in 1999. And the legislature has passed a law banning adding more guns to the list. Plus that judge that ruled against these lists because the cops, courts, gun owners, couldn't figure out if the damn thing was on or off the list. Like this gun.

I only shoot it on my property or the range. I don't take any of the "Assault Weapons" on public land, too much change of getting harassed by Barney Fife badge wearers.

So the NHM91 without the "Sport" stamped on it is legal here? Do we have a ruling from the big brains in the legal community? I may have to call the B-I-L in Arizona to see if I can bring one back. I don't know what is stamped on it.

I'm not a lawyer or have extra money to hire one but it's too close for comfort. Even some of the higher ups and legal beagles don't feel good about this. It may very well be legal, but I'm not willing to risk my freedom for it for a cop/lawyer/judge who doesn't know any better

What's banned is: Norinco: NHM 90, 90-2, 91 Sport. That's what's listed on the flow chart for the Appendix C AK Series. I've never seen or read about a 90-2 or a 91 Sport, no idea where they got those.

Meh. Never mind. Not worth the trouble. Dangit. I want my AKs back. Yes, I know I can go get a Saiga, or any of half a dozen other guns. But it irks me having them stay out of state.

I saw both of those threads couple of years ago. I researched it, consensus of opinion is an exact match, not just close. Like I said, if they wanted to ban all the NHM's just say all of them are banned, regardless of model designation. Like they did with the AK 47 listing.

But as I said, I don't go where the badge wearers are. ANY gun that has the evil features is going to raise their hackles. We've all read the threads where someone gets Officer Obie jumping up and down. Low profile with any of the EBR's is the best.

                        Great Info Fellas

Man I like this forum. So much to learn from all the experienced people here. I saw an NHM-91 on GunsAmerica today is why I brought up this subject. I wanted to buy it but wanted to convert it after buying it. So that it would look like a traditional AK. But now I think I will hold off on it just to be safe.

I looked for a GSAD, and found one that is just posted for sale online, but the asking price is just under $2000 dollars. But man is it pretty, with the folding bayonette and traditional stock. If I had the money I would buy it.

Thanks for all the input on this subject. It probably will keep me from getting myself arrested.
