    AR-15 Feeding Issues! Please help!

How's it going everyone, I'm fairly new to the AR-15 family so please bare with me. I've recently purchased a Stag Arms 2HT complete upper and Rifle Gear Aggressor lower and have encounter a problem the first time out at the range with it.

I'm currently running 2 Magpul 10/20 magazines with American Eagle .223 along with Field Time .223 reloads.

Now, the first problem was after shooting approximately 50 rounds for the first time (which shot flawlessly), the first bullet in the next magazine would get "stuck" as it tries to chamber a round. I can see the bullet and appears to be stuck where the feed ramp is, however after re-cocking the charging handle and letting it go, the bullet that was "stuck" will chamber correctly and the rest of the magazine would function properly. This seems to happen every first bullet of every fresh magazine.

After the frustrating day, I went home and broke my firearm down and did the standard cleaning and maintenance.

Today I was back at the range, the first magazine worked flawlessly and no signs of a malfunction, however the following magazine encounter the same problem that has occurred, the first bullet again was stuck on the feed ramp not wanting to chamber correctly until I once again re-cock the charging handle and the bullet would chamber correctly, the rest of the magazine shot fine without a problem, of course until a new fresh magazine was loaded.

Now I'd like to give a shout out for the newly open Field Time Target and Training staff in helping me out. When the range master inspected my firearm when I've encountered the problem said the fire arm was "over oiled". I honestly didn't, a thin layer of oil is all I did and I've never drenched any of my fire arms ever, but again I've heard mixed reviews on this and sure it can be debatable since I've read elsewhere that fixing this issue was to run the bolt "wet", which I'll try to avoid for now unless someone gives me an insight on why to do so.

I've read up on a scenario where the magazine catch isn't holding the magazine "tight" enough, causing an unbalance in height etc causing the bullet to go off course to hit the feed ramp. Now my question is, by tightening my bullet button, will it increase tension of the magazine release catch? I do not have the proper tools to do so, yet, but if this may be a possible fix then I will head down and pick up a bullet button tool. Again i'm fairly new to AR-15's, I've seen where a AR-15 without bullet buttons can simply spin the magazine catch (on opposite side of magazine release) would tighten the tension of the magazine catch.

Again any help would be greatly appreciated, all comments and advice welcome! Please just stay on topic, would like to have this issue resolved asap before going direct to the manufacture.

I can only say... I don't understand how running a gun wet would stop it from feeding a round. The opposite, if anything, would be closer to the truth.

If you're running two mags and two different kinds of ammo with the same problem, it sounds like you've found the cause...

I may have to try and run it wet and see what the results are, but a "loose" magazine seems to be a feasible problem as well. I am just still uncertain of how it works since I do not have a bullet button tool (just ordered one). Will tightening the bullet button increase the tension of the magazine catch? Causing the magazine to be more securely seated in the magwell?

EDIT: The idea occurred to me while reading a AR-15 feed problem that I came across here: http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.ht...&f=66&t=154089

Seems a fellow member of that forum suggested to adjust his magazine catch which resulting in a fix according to the OP of that thread.

maybe you need to tighten or loosen your bullet button, a friend got similar problem because his bb was too loose. ammo may be an issue too, but i would check the bb first. a hard paper clip will help to adjust the bb.

Try loading 9 rounds instead of 10.
See if it cures the problem..

I would go with this, the mag might be a bit tight for 10 rounds.

How are you releasing the bolt? riding it? pulling the charging handle? pingpong paddle?

Try with the bolt closed with none on in the chamber. Insert fresh mag and yank the charging handle back and release it like you stole it. If the bullet is still stuck then theres something wrong, if not then its because the bolt isnt released as rapid as it should be.

If you can only load 9 rounds of the 10 in a mag, change that mag. We're already limited to 10, why cut it short by 1 more.

Is it riveted to block to ten rds? Sounds like a common problem where the spring is forced up by a type of mag block, causing way too much tension on the feed lips.Start with less than ten and see how it goes.Is it hard to seat the mag?
Bad--compresses the spring to take up space, so the first round you insert feels like the 21st.

Good--no spring compression inside. The block sits inside the spring and stops the follower.

I honestly hope it's simply the magazine catch's fault and just have to tighten my bullet button, I will update this once I receive my tool and another trip to the range.

I honestly hope this is the problem, I have just purchased a stainless steel bullet button tool. I'm assuming the bullet buttons are loctited in place (according to all other AR-15 users) so I'll just wait until I get the proper tools come in the mail to adjust it. Honestly crossing my fingers that it'll be an easy fix.

I have already tried this method, even at half a stack (5 bullet within the magazine) the first bullet would still not want to enter it's chamber getting stuck on the feed ramp.

I am not riding the charging handle, I am pulling and releasing the charging handle instantly as it reaches a full stop. I have also tried the rifle with the bolt close, inserting magazine, and charging it. It still encounters the same problem.

I 100% agree with you on the 10 round limitation law, not being able to run the firearm to it's full potential drives me crazy, that honestly goes for anything, not just firearms.

I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking at and what you mean, sorry again I'm still a greenhorn when it comes to AR's. My magazines seems to have a good amount of tension on the spring stack, but again they're fresh and recently purchased and have only been used twice. They're nothing amazing, just standard Magpul Pmag 10/20 magazines.

Alright, it's been a while since I posted regarding feeding issues, however I FINALLY had some free time to visit the range today.

Prior to this visit I bought a couple Promag 10/20 magazines to see if I get any different results, I also received my stainless steel bullet button tool in the mail a few weeks ago. At first I was expecting the bullet button to be loctited in place, however, to my amazement it was NOT! I went ahead and readjust the bullet button (Turned the bullet button all the way in, readjust it out until magazine catch releases the magazine.) and applied a drop of loctite to ensure the bullet button would not rotate out of place.

As an ending result with range time today, it was a success! No feeding issues with either my previous Magpul magazines or the new Promags! Feed all .223 and 5.56 rounds like a champ.

Amazing how a simple problem can cause me so much grief, lol. I hope this thread can become helpful to others who may end up having this issue. Also want to thanks all the Calguners with who gave suggestions and guidance!

                      Bump....

went to range today fired about 100 rounds. Until i started having FTF/Double feed issues every round. Just checked my rifle, im surprised my mags weren’t falling out by how loose the mag catch was. This was on a featureless build using freedom week C-product magazines.

Typing this up because there is not much mentioned online for strictly FTF/doublefeed issues.
