Savage Mk II FV in 22lr vs .17 hm2

I was thinking about picking up a Mk II in 22lr for a cheap fun target gun, but I see they also produce a .17 hm2 for roughly the same price. Anyone have any experience with the .17 hm2 round? It seems reasonably priced and could be shot for relatively cheap or at least cheaper than the .17 Hmr. Is this round likely to survive or will I have a really cool paper weight in 5 years. Should I just skip this round and go with the 22lr or are there some redeeming qualities? Like I said, this will be just for target at the range and for occasional varmint (ground squirrels), and no im definitely NOT interested in the .17 hmr. Just too damned expensive.

It will shoot a little faster and flatter than the .22, but I would go with that. Plus, you can buy 10 bucks for 550 ammo at Wal-mart or 10 bucks for 50 ammo.

Daughter has the .17MII FVSS in a Sharp Shooter Supply laminated stock. The little thing will shoot bug-holes at 50yds, and has easily rang the 300yd steel at the club range......but ya gotta wait for it!

if you like target shooting id go with the 22lr. more versatile round since some indoor ranges only allow 22lr for rifles. some 22lr rounds like the stinger can be still be pretty powerful at closer ranges where the rainbow trajectory doesnt really have much effect (192ft/ lbs out of the barrel with stingers, 204 ft lbs w/ aguila supermaximums vs 166 with vmax hm2).
