This thread covers it pretty well:

Things I have learned from Assembling 2 AR lowers:
Get tape all over the left side of the lower when installing the bolt catch pin, otherwise you WILL scratch your lower
For me installing the front takedown pin is the hardest part unless you have the proper tool.
I had the little tool for my first lower and it took about 20 seconds.
On my second lower i could not find the tool and it took me about 30 minutes, losing one detent in the process
Thankfully Stag Arms had provided an extra one in their lower parts kit
You can find one of those tools if you google "ar-15 front pivot pin installation tool"
I used the guide from ar15.com: http://ar15.com/content/guides/assembly/lower/
And the video guide from LifeLibertyEtc.com (this was really helpful): http://lifelibertyetc.com/RangeBag.aspx
The best advice I can give is dont be nervous about it. It's easy stuff that anyone can do. Stay calm and it should go pretty smoothly.

front pivot pin install... just use something flat and hard, ie knife blade, razor blade. both work great. Just insert spring, then detent. use the razor blade to push the detent in flush, then put the pivot pin in place, remove razor, and work in the pivot pin. works like a charm.
check out this video... very helpful-A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.*

no need to buy any tool for that job. I just finished my first lower in about an hour and used the box cutter trick for the takedown detent/spring. Use the search function and you will find the vids and guides that will help alot. GL!Comment

Go slowly and don't rush. The feeling of excitement might make your hands shake, thereby making it harder to work with the smaller parts.

When you put the trigger guard in, support that area with a (reading)magazine or something similar so you don't break that little leg off driving the roll pin in.sigpicLord, make my hand fast and accurate.

The Life liberty video is the best I've seen. It's really simple and informative.Comment

I did my first build by lantern light during that big storm and power outage we had at the first of the year, and didn't even need to use anything flat to hold the spring and detent in place! Maybe I got lucky, but based on the advise from others here and at ARForums.com, I just used the pin itself to hold the spring compressed, then "popped" it in place. I did have my wife standing in position to block the flight of the detent and spring had they decided to launch, but didn't. Now watch, all my other builds I'll have to buy all kinds of special tools.
