    Practical difference between 5.56 & .223

Was at the LGS today and they have Federal 5.56 for $8.99/box. WM has American Eagle .223 for $6.99.

I know about the pressure differences between the two and my rifle can handle 5.56.

For shooting at 100yd paper and not much else, is there any other reason to get the Federal 5.56?

I mostly use AE 223 from Walmart. Never have a problem and accuracy is good for punching papers.

The 5.56 should be loaded a little hotter but its not that big of a difference. It would probably help if you are shooting at longer distances.

I shoot both, at those prices, I would buy the .223. I really cant tell much difference when plinking or punching paper.

because 5.56 sounds so much better then 223. Just think about it...

              FA-FA-SIX is Kooler then two-two-three.

besides, the military uses it so it must be good!

                5.56 vs .223

I can't tell a difference between either, I bought a couple of boxes from my LGS and loaded my mags aternating between two rnds .223 and two rnds 5.56, did another that started .223 and halfway thru changed to 5.56 and when at the range popping rounds, I never felt, heard, or noticed any difference. Almost makes me think that when you buy this commercially available "5.56" it is all just a "packaging" change. I have not tried any IMO "legit" surplus 5.56.

You are going to need a chronograph to see the difference.

Its not just a packaging change.

The price difference could have been from grain too. Not all 5.56 is going to be the same as M855.

Either way, $6.99 plus tax is $.38 per round which is insane to pay, especially for generic .223.

Wow, you just sold me on the 5.56. Was about to pick up a case of .223 but I guess I'm going for the 5.56 now. Haha.
