Tactical Bolt action 308

I have been debating on getting one for range/paper punching. It seems like that the tactical versions are the ones that have features that interest me like a removable magazine, stock with adjustable check piece, etc. The tactical versions cost more but they definitely more convenient when shooting/reloading at a bench all day.

Im sure they all shoot good, so im looking more towards ergonomics,ease of loading/shooting, as well as versatility.

IF you plan on upgrading the rifle at any point, the Rem 700 is the way to go.

As out of box accuracy goes, the savage is a great choice.

+1 for the Rem 700 - can go with the 5R barrel (comes with the H&S stock) right from the factory. Add glass and a little trigger work and you're good to go.

The Steyr SSG is a world apart from the Savage and Remington. If your budget allows go for the Steyr.

Precision = the 700, otherwise why not a Ruger GSR? It's half the price but definitely not half the gun.

I was in the same boat, never finding exactly what I wanted, so making my own. Howa 1500 barreled action with custom stock. Very nice yet inexpensive barreled action and I get what I want.

I like your thinking on this, Phil. I haven't seen anyone state effective range for the rifles mentioned in this thread. I've heard bench gun used but that doesn't denote range at all. I've heard the Howa 1500 can reach 1000 meters with good optics.

I like this thread. I hope more people chime in.

Question for everyone:

If the shooter's main goal is too join the California Long Distance Precision Rifle Club, does it make sense to get a starter .308 bolt action just to get your feet wet for a year or two? Before, making a sizable investment in a rig to learn and compete with?

How much you willing to spend? If you're willing to buy a Steyr SSG-04, you have to be willing to spend $2000+. That is within entry point of a used custom rifle. When my roommate wanted a bolt gun, I found him a GAP Rock for $2000 even. Imho, used custom is the best value if you have coin to spend.

I just dumped off a Tikka Scout cause moving to 6.5x47 Lapua and have too many 308s. $800 brand new. That 20" barrel reached 1100 yards just fine & shot just as good as rifles that cost 3-4x as much. The bang for the buck was features like DBM, crisp adjustable trigger, side bolt release, best cheapo polymer stock than competitors, etc. And it was only 8 lbs. If you're just getting into it, I would push $$$ toward glass.
