Ruger Enthusiasts: I have a question

Happy Memorial Day, first of all.

Would one of the Ruger Centerfire Rifle people please tell me the difference between the Mini 14 Ranch Rifle Model 5817 w/ blk synthetic stock and the Mini 14 Tactical Rifle Model 5847 ? The 5817 is an inch longer but everything looks the same.

Then, can either Rifle accept magazines between 5-30..? ( not in CA, ofc. )
Why doesn't Ruger provide a 10 round mag with this gun?..

I'm trying to get my hands around how Ruger classifies this product line.

Btw, I am a fan of the M-1 Garand action and possibly this line. HickOk and Nutnfancy provide decent reviews on the Mini 14 with Nutnfancy's trademark objectivity and HickOk just enjoying the Rifle.

God Bless our Heroes who have given their lives for our nation.

If they looked the same, you must have seen incorrect pictures:
    Your "regular" Mini-14:

    Mini-14 Tactical:

Being that it has a pistol grip and adjustable stock, you'll need a bullet button on it. I've also seen them with a flash hider, which is another feature. EDIT: I see there is a tactical model with just a flash hider. I wouldn't pay an extra hundred for a flash hider and then have to put a BB on it.

      Hi Roushstage 2.

Thanks bud, if you pull up the specific model numbers that I referenced on the website then you will see they are literally identical.

      Thoughts?

Do they make 5847 without a flash hider?

It'd be 5855. Just the regular Mini-14, blued with syn. stock.

With an 18" barrel, though. The 16"er is a selling point for me.

The Tactical is availble with a pistol grip stock or standard stock (5847). Neither can be brought into Ca due to the flash hider. It also has a barrel that is 2.38" shorter than the ranch which is supposed to be stiffer and less prone to stringing when hot. The Ranch (5817) is Ca legal and can be brought in with a 5 rd mag. If you want the shorter barrel, they have the 5820 which has the 16.12" barrel without the flash hider and is Ca legal, but it comes standard with 2 - 20rd mags so most dealers won't ship them to Ca. If you have preban mags and you can talk a dealer into dissassembling the mags into parts, you can get a FFL to receive it.

If you could get an FFL to order a #5820 out of the LE catalog you'd get what you are looking for. Only problem is the 20 round magazine it comes with as std.

Otherwise you are either going to have to cut the barrel back via a gunsmith on a regular 18" model.

I have a standard #581 series Mini and the extra 2" of barrel isnt a detriment

Once that flash hider is on there, its back up to 18".

Does the 18" still have the heavier profile?

The flash hider would be coming off to stay featureless, 16" just looks a little handier than the 18" ones I've handled and I'm thinking the barrel might be a little more rigid.

                        Thanks, RoushStage 2 !

I personally like the Garand look if you will but I can see the Rifle can be modded in a good way.

Yes all the newer #581 series and up do.

Some of the #580 series might still have the older thin barrel depending on when manufactured (this was when Ruger was doing the re-tooling of the Mini).
