6.8spc as first AR build- need opinion.

Hey guys, I am in the process of collecting parts. Thinking about building a 6.8 so it can do double duty for deer and hogs. I have a 22lr for plinking. What is the calguns concensus?

If it's your first AR build I'd recommend against it. It's not cheap to feed. For a full build you can get a bolt gun and optics and put down pigs and deer farther than 300 yards with better calibers.

I won't bother retyping what you said since I agree 100%.

If you want it, just know its a lot more than 5.56

Ok, as the others have said, a bolt gun would be cheaper. However, if you want one, and go into it knowing it will be more expensive to feed than a .223, there is nothing wrong with it. If you reload, it is even better. AR15 Performance makes one of the best 6.8 AR bolts on the market. Their barrels are good too. Bison Armory also does good work. Go check out the 68forums.com page and browse around there. Lots of good information there.

Thanks for your input. Probably should keep the build simple and look for a bolt action rifle. It does make more sense.

Here is what I would recommend. Build a 5.56 AR. Make sure you like the platform. Save up some money and buy a 6.8 upper for your AR. Voila!

In all seriousness. 6.8spc is a great round! It is a little expensive. You want to make sure you are ready to commit before investing all that money.

                Just my two cents.

Ive been hog hunting and id take a semi auto anyday over a bolt action anyday. With that said 6.8 is expensive but if you dont mind thr price think about 458socom! thats a hog stopper!

Well I ordered a 16" 6.8 barrel and bcg from ARP today. I appreciate the input from everyone. Hell its only money , worst case I get to build another upper!

                          Here is what I did

                          6.8 SPC AR-15

                          Then the 5.56 AR-15
