    m1a Ammunition

I have been looking into a few different rounds for my socom II, in a home defense situation. Please I don't need use a pistol or shotgun instead comments. Just opinions on ammunition. For the sake of argument here, over penetration is not an issue. Just effectiveness, expansion, stopping power.
All ranges in these scenarios would be within 150yds

I am trying to decide between
    Hornady
    .308 Win 168gr TAP
    HSM
    .308 Win 168gr Amax
    .308 Win 168gr HPBT Match
.308 Win 168gr Berger VLD Match

Given the muzzle energy and power of the 7.62 round, almost anything you use will be fine. I recently purchased a case of Winchester white box NATO spec 147 gr Q3130 and feel completely comfortable in using it for any and all home/self defense situations. You should be able to find it online in the $16.00/$18.00 a box range.

The most accurate factory round I have found for my Scout is Federal Gold Match, 168gr.

What HD scenario would be out to 150 yds?Does CA laws allow you to shoot that far in a HD scenario? That seems like a great distance to shoot to protect yourself from a threat.

Probably doesn't happen in CA much. I knew a guy in AZ that had a ranch out in the boonies. From time to time banditos would come up from Mexico and raid his ranch. He kept an M60 on the roof.

Whatever you shoot make sure it was made for this rifle. Mil surplus or mil spec is the only round you should use. The M1A, like the Garand and many other military type rifles has a free-floating firing pin. A round with a soft primer could certainly lead to a slam-fire. This could result in major damage to you and your rifle.

Not so. Both those weapons mentioned have a safety bridge in the receiver which prevent the firing pin from going fully forward until the bolt is fully rotated.

100% correct! The M1A is chambered for commercial .308 and it is clearly stamped on the barrel (it will eat Nato surplus all day though). Any ammo in 7.62x51 or .308 will do at the ranges you are talking about, 150 yards or less you don't need anything special.

My M1A really likes my Hornady 178 A-max handloads seated off the rifling. Don't know if you can get 178's in a factory load, but they shoot pretty good loaded to mag length as well.

I respectfully disagree. According to my corrospondance with Springfield, the M1A can shoot 7.62 or .308 without any problems at all.

any of those that you mentioned will work for hd.... why would you need up to 150yrds in hd situation though? .308 will diff. do the job. i honestly thought of a .308 as a hd when i first started as a member on calguns but i love my .45 acp as my hd gun now
