    Savage 111 Hog Hunter Questions

Anyone have experience with the Savage 11/111 Hog Hunter rifle in .223 cal.? (I'm not a hunter and gave up long guns due to shoulder problems some years back. Basically used to shot moderate range, 500-600 yds. back in days long past). Since I don't own any long guns, I was just looking. I'm looking at the Hog Hunter because of the iron sights and is inexpensive by comparison both in arm and ammo. Prime use, punch paper or if need be, reach out and touch someone out of pistol range.

I've searched various forums but find very little on that particular model. Out of two or three posts on the Hog rifle one had a bad experience with quality control, etc. One or two bad rifles do NOT make a product line bad. Another stated that the rifle is "ammo pickey"

Although it has iron sights, I did not see on the Savage site if it is drilled and tapped for glass, YES/NO?

    Thank you.

    Kyle

Yes all sav actions are tapped .This model has a cheap stock but rifle and sights are good .You get what you pay for. If they charged more it would have a better stock . It is marketed as a hog gun with a short barrel not a long range sniper rifle.

Have you checked out the axis series? Good out of the box for punching paper, then take a look at the Redfield scope line for a nice paper punching package.

Thanks guys. Even with my aging eyes, for me, iron sights are more practical, but never too old to change I guess. Yeah, I really do not have the funds to get into the "better/best" camp.

        Thanks again.

          Savage .223 hog

I just purchased one of these rifles and for the money it's nice. I added a BSA 6-24x44 30mm mil dot scope and shot it last weekend. With cheap fiocci ammo I was getting about a 2 inch group at 100 yards. I was consistentaly getting 2 shots almost on top of each other and the 3rd was a flyer. I switched to HSM .223 ammo and the groups dropped to about 1 inch and it was a really windy day. This rifle shoots great right out of the box. I didn't try any shots with the iron sights and had to remove the back sight to get the scope on. All in all, I'm happy with my purchase. I have also owned the Savage Axis in 270 and it shot great also, but I like this rife because it is smaller and much lighter.
