question about thompson

hey guys so I have been looking at old school thompsons and am wondering if they are CA legal or if they need on of those non-pistol grip handles like on featureless ARs(i dont know the name of the grip).
I was looking at them on gunbroker and haven't seen the sellers mention anything about CA which itself is strange.

Do they need one of those grips like the featureless ARs? or some type of bulletbutton deal?

Read the flowchart links on the top of the forum.

So yes, either remove all evil features (like a wrap on the pistol grip etc etc) or lock the magazine.

My Dad has a mag lock device on his. I haven't seen any way to go featureless on one, but then again I haven't been looking for parts to do so.

Well, they of course are not Cal legal as factory configured. You have to get a BB like device for them (which I'm told is a bit of a pain) or you could go the kydex grip cover route, but w/o the pistol grip it would prove to be very ungainly (I think) and of course you can't have real 50 or 100 round drums (10 rd max) kind of defeats the purpose of the weapon. I have the RAW version and it is a great shooter, but very heavy (12 lbs unloaded and much more loaded with a full 50 rds)
A great bullet hose though.

You could make a Tommy gun (semi-auto) CA legal if you did some type of a bullet button & 10 round mag/drum. They have 1 or 2 bad features other than a detachable mag. Both the 1921/7/8 & M-1 type uses a pistol grip. The 1921/7/8 has or can have a 2nd pistol grip. A Tommy gun would look stupid without the pistol grip(s) IMO.

You dont have to go with the front grip version. Just have to find some way to lock the mag in so its not detachable and limit the capacity to 10rnds. Personally I would hate to see one of these changed to be CA Legal. More of a reason to move to a free state.

yea i agree, i ahte the look of them and based on the gorgeous appearance of the thompson i might have to get a bulletbutton to maintain those looks.

FWIW you cant see it when you are shooting it!

The only factor for me is how badly I want those evil features or if I have hi cap prebans for the platform in question.

yea, but i also feel like the non-pistol grip (whatever its called) wouldnt be good for shooting one, though i have never shot one. I'm thinking I'll want the BB so i can have the pistol grip for some more control of the gun.

While I def prefer a proper pistol grip, fin grips and the like actually are not so bad once you get used to them.

I would not worry about one on a thompson. First of all, you are not buying a full auto gun, not to mention they are pretty heavy so the recoil and report is pretty manageable.

Can't seem to find it at the moment but someone here made a great looking wood fin that blended the grip and stock nicely.

touche sir, at 12 or so pounds thats pretty good. I've never dealt with a bullet button or the fin grips so I haven't experienced the pros and cons myself so I will likely hit the range and see if I can try and feel a couple up!

Try both, you never know right? Up to you to decide what sucks less, ugly no thumb grip or no free dropping mags? Ah the joys of Ca. . .
