AK hunters??

Random question for the hunter types...is it illegal to hunt with a CA legal AK??

Just curious because my ak is more accurate(3lb. trigger) for me than any lever 30-30 I've shot an supposedly it hits with appx. the same power of the 30-30. It is also very reliable semi auto so if the hogs come in packs I'd feel pretty safe. Do they make 7.62x39 leadless ammo??

So is it illegal or jus frowned on by all??

As I understand it there is no restrictions against using an AK or any other model for hunting.
Also note that there is no max magazine size for centerfire rifle hunting in CA as I understand it.

(Besides magazine laws, and fixed magazine 10 round max requirement)

Back when I first was looking at ak's an ar's there was some thing about them only being legal in certian countys in which the head sherrif recognized them as being legal. Also thought there might be somthing to do with magizine capacity or ammo(like not finding leadless ak ammo) Thats why I ask the experts!!

Nah, they should be up to date by now. I saw a letter sent to LEO telling them about what they need to look for when they see AK/AR's/etc...just be compliant and the firearms are good to go.

For OP, anything that is centerfire can be used for big game, other then that...nongame and small game you can use whatever you like as long as their CA compliant.

That is incorrect.

Like I said before there is no limit of magazine size for hunting in California with a centerfire rifle. Besides magazine laws, and fixed magazine 10 round max requirement.

If you have a RAW or a featurless rifle and you happen to have a legally possessed Beta mag you could hunt with it.

Shotguns have a shell limit.

From Hunting Regs 10-11

Shotguns capable of holding not more than three shells firing single slugs may be used for the taking of deer, bear and wild pigs.

just do not use FMJ rounds and you are good to go. song dogs and deer will not know the difference. Just be mindful of your effective range and your rounds effective range and all is good.

You have nothing to fear from packs of hogs so DO NOT be shooting into groups of hogs rapid fire. I have been sicking arrows into hogs for twenty years and have yet to be killed.

30-30 packs a bit more punch then a 7.62 so i would say your range should be no more then 100 yards for clean kills. Make sure you hit them like you are shooting a bow, quartering away and just off the plate that protects their shoulders.
