preferred ammo options for Aero Precision M5

    Hey all,

I have an Aero Precision M5 in .308 Win with a 1/10 twist. I am looking for input on a good, reliable, accurate all around ammo for this. I run Federal match 168g BTHP in my SPS tactical, but I am wondering if that is would effectively cross over to this gun, or if something else would be better, given that it is a semi-auto versus a bolt gun. I have seen some deals on Winchester M80 149g 7.62x51, but I don't have any experience with it.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Shoot groups with every ammo you have. Each gun performs differently with every load. You just need to find the right load for that gun, or at least a load that's good enough.

If your gas block is adjustable then tune it to the load you are using. If it's not adjustable then experiment with different projectile weights until you find something that is reliable and doesn't overly batter the action.

You're not looking for a specific kind of ammo or for a specific purpose, but you're looking for a general purpose ammo. Use anything. I don't even know what a better "all around ammo" means. Because if something is really good at a particular aspect (say long range accuracy) but is really expensive, doesn't that mean it fails in being good all around ammo? Sounds like your ideal ammo is something that's middling in everything.

Semantics aside, shoot the ammo that aligns with the purpose of the gun. Hunting? Use hunting ammo. Breaking it in? Cheap ammo. Leisurely punching holes at 100/200 yards on a Saturday afternoon? Slightly less cheap ammo. The AP M5 is a good gun, it can handle anything, even steel cased. Even the same ammunition you put in your Remington. M80 is fine. If you put M193 or M855 through your 5.56 AR, then there's no reason you should be concerned with M80 through your .308 AR. But like M193, it's good ammo and it will work fine, but it's not match ammo. So set your expectations accordingly.

Mine has only been feed my handloads, so nothing commercial. My cheap .308 load is a 150 gr Hornady FMJBT with 42.9 gr of IMR4064, and it shoots reliably in every gun.

Can't go wrong with that combo. Hornady 308 and 223 are probably the most accurate FMJ available.

Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.
