    Second upper or not?

I was looking to buy a second AR upper as a spare. I will only shoot under a 1000 rounds a year. Is it worth buying a second???

Depends, is just for a spare? In my opinion no. Not for your expected round count in a year

What is an expected life span of a PSA upper with a hammer forged barrel? (current upper)

Man, you're talking thousands and thousands of rounds. Just keep your rifling clean and watch for keyhole impacts on your target. If after you shoot with a clean bore, you see keyhole imprints on your paper targets, It means your rounds are tumbling and not on its proper trajectory. A thousand rounds a year can make your barrel last 10-15 years or more.

I've been thinking the same thing; sort of. My thought is one upper with iron sights for HD/training and adding another upper scoped, probably a 3-9x, for plinking at the range.

I was telling my brother how I wanted to start my second build and he brought up a good point.

Yes, I could just build a second gun. However, why not just put some money from the second lower into making the lower I already have a top notch lower and just buy a second upper with a different look to it since the upper and lower go together so easily.

I thought.....good point. Drawbacks, both uppers can't be shot at the same time by two people, in a zombie attack I would only have one AR to grab, the extra 5 seconds it takes to switch out the uppers.

All in all, I really don't need a complete second gun, but then again, whats the point of just changing the upper for looks. However, I currently have a 16" upper, so I may consider just making my lower the best it can be and then just buying a really nice 20" upper or something like that, so that when I change it, there is a point to it other than looks.

I bought a spare upper, it lead me to build a new lower for it though...

Just get another lower to go along with it. That should solve all your problems. But if you intend to just have a "spare", then no. Just buy more ammo.
