Wow....now this is the subject Ive been looking for. Very nice. I have 2 16" AR builds, one witth a carbine length and 1 with a mid length gas system. They are just for general going to the range puttin them on a bunch and shoot away. Ive recently gotten interested in shooting farther than the usual 50 yard and 100 yard at my local range. I wondered if my mid length gas system would be ok with shooting at 200 yards and farther. I was planning on putting a magpul prs stock and a Millett 4-16x 50 scope on her. I would be ok if I used a higher grain ammo? Sorry I didnt mean to jack this post, but if anyone can help Id appreciate it!!!

Higher grain ammo... you must work within the constrains of the barrels twist rate. Even then, you need to take the time to find which ammo works best for YOUR barrel.
Your 16" barrel assuming its not total junk will take you much further than you think, 200 yards is a walk in the park.
Buying or reloading better ammo than the general plinking ammo is going to have a profound effect on accuracy and effective range. At greater distance your hardware can only take you so far... develop good marksman ship skills and use good ammo.
For example: If plinking ammo is 2 MOA ammo and match ammo is less than 1 MOA ammo and your target is 6" in size at 600 yards (1 MOA). That right there is the difference between consistently being able to hit your target and missing.
Magpul PRS stock is pretty awesome, I use one on my precision rig with a 24" stainless bull barrel.
Millet TRS-1 scope is a decent budget scope. I have one too. It doesn't track as well as I hoped. Sometimes 1/4 MOA click isn't always an exact 1/4 MOA. Make sure you get matching reticle/turrets in MIL/MIL since they don't offer MOA/MOA. Only MOA/MIL. Once you learn how to range and measure correction using the reticle, you will want matching turrets. You can thank me later.
If you can afford better glass now... get it. If its only for target shooting, I would much rather have a fixed 10x or 16x SWFA SS for the same price.ExtremeXComment

Really depends on what you are using it for... Honestly, even if you were going to use it for competition, I would go with a shorter barrel. Competition is fun and all, but it's really just additional training for me.
What I am getting at is this... I could buy a race gun and improve my times/scores, but I don't carry a race gun. I carry a defensive gun. Same goes with an AR. I am much more likely to engage someone up close and personal so having the extra mobility is what I go for. I can still make that long range shot if I need too, I just need to know my equipment and my capabilities.... Err, limitations to be more exact.
Just MY 2 cents. You may be able to do the stuff I do with a 22" barrel and do it better."Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest."~M.Twain~Comment

ExtremeX, Yeah, I'm still new to glass and I started staring at the subject of MOA/Mil and ballistics....which I still find confusing. I'll keep that in mind with a better scope, thanksComment

WOA is a top notch company. They are a bit expensive for what they IMO. I have yet to see anything suggesting that the less expensive DPMS barrels shoot any worse. In fact, I think the MK12 barrel is awesome and there is no shortage of people reporting MOA with it. There are other really good barrel makers as well.
To the OP, FPS difference between an 18'' and a 16'' is negligible. In terms of twist, if you got the fastest twist your bullet still wouldn't even make a complete 1/2 revolution in the extra 2'' of barrel. Generally a 16'' barrel will be stiffer than a 18'' barrel. The only benefit to the 18'' barrel and IMO is a big one is the rifle length gas system. For a run'n'gun build, generally the shortest, lightest, and most man manueverable is best. Anything else and the 18'' may be a better choice. From what I've seen though 18'' might be a bit more expensive. If the manuevarability isn't a big deal why not just step up to a 20''? The velocity and the amount of twist will be greater than an 18''.Last edited by Josh3239; 05-30-2012, 1:15 PM.Comment

Well...here is me and my mid length (gas system) 16" (just sold it) JP upper build shooting at 600 yards.
So to answer your question....your rig should be good to go to 500+ yards with the correct ammo.
I was using 77gr SMK hand loads in the video.
Take care,Stan

I would also consider krieger barrels turned by accuracy systems inc. Ive also been meaning to try a Rainier SPR barrel which uses a Shilen Blank. They also have a more cost friendly barrel that uses a Wilson Blank.
I ordered a barrel from Black Hole Weaponry for a new build. Everything they make for 5.56 is 416 Stainless, 1:8 twist, and they use 3 land polygonal rifling. I have a 16" stainless barrel on order with them right now for a Recce build. If it shoot as good as I hope, ill end up making another one with an SPR contour.ExtremeXComment
