    Stag or Rock River Arms?

I just moved to cal about 6 months ago and i'm looking to buy a AR-15. Can you guys help me with any info you might have on these two companies Stag, Rock River Arms or should I go with a different company. I have anywhere from 700-1200 to spend and want a tactical style AR-15. Any info will help thanks for your time.

Would it be easier and cheaper just to buy a full AR-15 or build my first rifle from parts I can chose from? I have no prior rifle building exp.

Buy the Stag 2HT upper http://www.stagarms.com/righthalf.htm
Buy a lower, parts kit, and stock. Then Build it Using the AR15.com build guide. It's easy and you will learn how the AR works by building it!

I'm sure there is no better feeling then to shoot down range with a rifle you by yourself put together so i've decided that i'm going to build my first rifle/AR-15 from the ground up.

If you're the least bit mechanical, you can DIY with ease.

Calguns lowers are available from Wes at Ten Percent Firearms in Taft. You can get it shipped to a local FFL for DROS, or just make the pilgrimage to Taft and go see Wes in person!

As for uppers, lower parts kits, stocks and optics, all those items can ship direct to your door, just shop around for what you like and want, and limber up your credit card. To get tactical will probably put you in the upper range of your price limitations. Your biggest decision for cost will probably be the railed forend. Single piece free floats cost the most, multi-piece non-free-floats cost much less. The difference in performance, for a carbine length barrel of 16" is probably negligible, but that's a matter of opinion and you will hear strong ones on each side of that one.

The next biggest cost issue you will face is optics. If you want to go beyond iron sights, and you will, the hot things for CQB builds are Aimpoints and EOTechs. There's a whole thread on that very subject that's been going on for the past couple of weeks. You can put a cheap red dot sight on your upper for under $100. To get a quality optic will run you $300 - $400 more. If you're going to plink, wait to spend the money. If you're hot to go 3 gunning or want to be super precise right out of the box, well, you'll have to spend the money to get a better optic.

Wes at Ten Percent and Hector and Michelle at Cold War Shooters are my vendors of choice for all things AR. They have banner ads at the top of these pages.

Congratulations - - you now have BRD! ("Black Rifle Disease") There is no cure and the only treatment is to build, and build some more!

If you want to have the option of shooting steel cased ammo like Wolf, do not get a Stag upper. Stag uppers have a strange problem with steel cased ammo. I recommend RRA, but keep in mind that RRA uppers sometimes take 6-8 weeks to ship. No matter what you do, make sure the chamber and barrel are chrome lined. You should also look at Spikes Tactical and CMMG for uppers. Good luck!

i haven't shot either a stag or a RRA but i ordered an RRA as my upper for my first OLL. I got it because it was cheaper than the stag i wanted and i could do some mods to it for a little more money. Also Stag 20" don't come chromelined barrels and you can get the RRA 20" chromelined for 40 more dollars.

Just build it, cheaper and more fun for an AR to be had.
I have a complete stag lower/upper/LPK and it performs flawless with an EOtech 512.
I bought my stripped lower/LPK from Chris at lanworld. Pat from Metroshot may be able to help you as well. Both are kool dudes.
