More gimmick than not.

Don't do it. Best-case: It removes an unnoticeable amount of recoil by preventing the carrier from traveling that last inch to the trunnion. Worse-case: Your rifle doesn't work anymore. If you're using it to "fix" an over-gassed AK, you've got bigger problems.

I just use the stock steel recoil pad.

Everything I've read about them says they're a quick fix for other more serious problems such as over gassing and worn out recoil spring. Some people swear by them though. I was tempted to try one but some very knowledgable people steered me away.

Throw it in the trash, the ak is fine the way it is. There has been pebbles, sand, mud, and dirt. Lube it up and your good to go

I installed one of these in my MAK 90 about 18 years ago -

The rifle was working fine without it; but back then, I was into emptying 75-round drum mags as fast as possible, tearing up hillsides ..


- and so I figured that for $7.00, it was cheap insurance.



The Recoil Buffer is still in place, and the rifle is still working just fine.

Got a 1" rubber butt pad for the recoil. Best $20 spent on upgrading a rifle.

I have one on all of my AK type guns and others too. They work wonders. My MAK90 in 223 started have problems and after I put in the buffer, problem solved. Until you fire maybe 3,000 or more rounds in a gun you won't know the long term effect of not using the buffer. Better safe than sorry!

I put one on my Ak and it does help a liitle bit. Try to get the softer one if possible. It seems to protect the rear of the bolt carrier a little, quiets the action some, and seems to cycle rounds a tiny bit faster. Its worth trying for yourself, and its cheap enough that if you dont like it, just take it out.

It won't reduce recoil, all it will do is change the profile of the recoil to have a "bounce" at the end of it. This changed recoil profile might be more or less managable depending on who is shooting.

If your bolt is hitting the rear of the gun then putting a piece of rubber in there won't fix it.

It is a solution looking for a problem IMHO.
