When my stepson was 17, I gave him a parts kit and took him to a build party. (Yea, I could have just helped him build it but, I wanted him to experience a BP, not rely on me and be able to get ideas and help from others.) He did an outstanding job and, for some weird reason, he wanted to paint it afterwards. So, he parkerized it at the BP and did NOT oil it afterwards. We went to Walmart the next morning and he found some two tone textured paint and a can of primer. He had never rattle canned anything before and I wasn't sure how it would come out. But, it was less than $10 for everything and I do have a blast cabinet and park tank at home. So, we could always redo it. Anyway, the forest green with black speckles ended up looking great with the black furniture I supplied him. So, don't knock textured finishes until you try them. In fact, many people pay a lot to have someone texture their Glocks and other plastic guns.

My experience with black bbq "high heat" spray paint has been negative. I let the paint cure for weeks but it makes no difference. Any solvent that touches the painted surfaces strips the paint right off, which makes cleaning much more of a chore. Hoppes and Shooter's Choice both strip it with just the smallest of drips; heck, even CLP makes it rub off, and don't get Gunscrubber near it!

If you're going to paint, use Alumahyde or Duracoat or a finish that is designed to stand up to solvents.

For my rifle, next chance I get it will be into the blast cabinet and a nice dark parkerizing job. Lesson learned!

Yep, the only reason to use BBQ paint is if one wants to duplicate Arsenal's crappy finish.

Like I said I don't remember the name it was recommended by nicoroshi and my friend who built before me let me use his. I think it was called dupli high heat engine paint. Bought at oreillys auto parts. I'll ask my friend.

I used Wheeler Cerama-Coat. It looks great but chips with any metal-to-metal contact (safety catch on receiver). Spray paint would probably work just as well. I might rust blue just the receiver later

I was doing some work on my AK and decided to repaint the front sight and a spare Receiver cover.

I was basically experimenting and was not expecting anything special and so I used a can of spray paint which I had already in the garage; a coating I had used previously on my motorcycle's frame and Brake Calipers with fairly good results.

But this application was a different animal. I had never used this Spray Paint on a firearm before, so I did not know what to expect as it came in contact with elevated barrel temperatures, cleaning solvents and frequent handling; all issues that had no similar comparisons as applied to my bike's Frame and Brake parts.

Well, this stuff completely exceeded my expectations as a firearm coating...after being allowed to cure for one week, it's proven to be tough enough to resist solvents and repeated cleaning / rubbing / polishing.

It is tough as nails, won't chip or rub off, ( even after umpteen removals and re-installs of the AK's Receiver Cover )

The Spray Paint is RUST-OLEUM Metallic Engine Enamel - Advertised to resist heat up to 650 F and to be Gas and Oil resistant ( it is ! )

                        COLOR: 260750 - Blacknight

The finish is a Very Dark Charcoal Gray and, in sunlight, it has what looks like a few some barely perceptible sparkles of dark Aluminum.

This very subtle feature serves to give the finish a perception of "depth" or "solid mass".

You can see the effect to some extent if you magnify the picture in the link below, and then magnify again, but this time, home in on the Cap:

                        It works for me...

The "Right to Keep and Bear Arms" was not created by the 2nd Amendment; it was merely an acknowledgement of an existing, In-Alienable Right

                          Just my 0.02 USD worth

Has anyone tried any of the VHT products? Their Flame-Proof header paint works real well when properly cured.

Where are we going that it's getting this hot and why am I in this hand-basket?
